The purpose of this study is analyzing the effects of the attachment to parents on children's self-esteem and learning motivation, as well as presenting the basic information to form a positive self-esteem and learning motivation and the details are as follows.
1. What is the relationship between the attachment to parents and children's self-esteem and learning motivation?
2. How far can the attachment to parents prove children's self-esteem and learning motivation?
3. How do self-esteem and learning motivation show the difference according to the gender and grade?
To achieve this purpose, the experiment of 455 elementary students in 5th and 6th grade in Seoul & Kyungki province was conducted to find out the attachment to parents, self-esteem and learning motivation and the following conclusions were drawn from the results examined in P<0.5 significant level through Pearsons correlation coefficient, t-test, one-way ANOVA and regression analysis.
1. There is absolutely positive correlation between the attachment to parents and self-esteem. The study shows those two are closely connected with the father more than the mother because as far as the father has good communication with the child and he is very reliable, the child can develop positively their appearance self, family self, friend-related self and teacher-related self as well as self-assurance. Therefore the father significantly affected children's emotional development.
2. There is positive interrelation between the attachment to parents and leaning motivation. Especially the attachment to the mother has a greater influence on children's learning motivation than the father. It explains that the better parents and the child communicate and rely on each other, the more the desire to learn improves. Hence the children can study actively and positively if they maintain their trustful relationship and good communication with parents.
3. When it comes to the grade, 5th grade students have higher self-esteem and learning motivation than 6th grade students. The lower-grade students have self-confidence and positive motivation for learning. That seems to be because the higher-grade students consider themselves realistically from different angles. Especially in terms of gender, girls have more negative awareness about their physical self-esteem than boys while there is no big difference in learning motivation between them. It is considered because the standard, expectation and concern about beauty are not in the same level.
To conclude, as the attachment has a positive effect on children's self-esteem and learning motivation, the various education program for parents should be provided to build the amicable attachment between parents and children.
