The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of song, chant and game in the elementary English learning and teaching and to confirm learners' achievement in the functional skills of listening and speaking.
The subjects chosen for this study was taken from 5th grade of the "K" elementary School in Seoul and divided into 4 groups(experimental groups A, B and C and controlled group D). These 4 groups are recognized as similar groups according to result from pre-listening and pre-speaking tests.
The experimental groups and the controlled group were given 5th grade regular English textbooks as main texts for this study. The same lesson program was applied in 4 groups. But song was applied in every lesson only with the experimental group A, chant was applied in every lesson only with the experimental group B, and game was applied in every lesson only with the experimental group C. On the other hand, the lesson without song, chant and game was given to the controlled group D in every lesson.
For the evaluation of learner's achievement, 2 kinds of tests were given: listening comprehension by the multiple choice test and speaking competence by the controlled interview between the teacher and the student. The data was analyzed statistically using the SPSS program, MANOVA F and LSD and results obtained were as follows.
Firstly, in the result of the skill of listening function, the development grade of each group showed that group A was 3.90 point, group B was 4.77 point, group C was 3.03 point, and group D was 1.13 point. The significant differences were obtained before and after learning for each group. The order of the learning achievement among the groups was shown as B>A>C>D. An analysis of variance of the achievement showed a significant differences between groups A and D, groups B and D, and groups C and D.
Secondly, in the result of the skill of speaking function, the development grade of each group showed that group A was 3.77 point, group B was 5.13 point, group C was 3.87 point, and group D was 2.07 point and significant differences were obtained before and after learning for each group. The order of the learning achievement among the groups was shown as B>C>A>D. An analysis of variance of the achievement showed a significant difference between groups B and D. But there were no significant differences between groups A and D, and groups C and D.
In conclusion, it is suggested that instruction applied song, chant and game contributes to the learner's development of listening and speaking skills. For more effective learning and teaching through song, chant and game in elementary English education, the studies about choice of appropriate song, chant and game to the student's level, effective teaching procedure and right time for application should be continued.
