This study was aimed to establish the self-concept on profession and dedicate to the development of nursing profession of the nurses by understanding the relation between self-concept of the nurses on nursing profession and the performance of nursing practice in general hospital by confirming the importance of self-concept on profession and renewing the understanding about the performance of nursing practice.
377 nurses working in 3 private university hospitals and other 3 national and public hospitals with over 500 beds in Seoul City have been the subjects of this study, and the materials have been collected from Sep. 20 to Oct. 5, 2000 for 15 days. As the research tool of study question airs were used, and the research instrument on the self-concept on profession developed by Arthur(1990) and translated by Roh, Chun Hi and Song, Kyung Ae was used and the research tool on the 25 items and 4 points measures and on the performance of nursing practice developed by Chung, Young Ji(1998) was used after amending and supplementing and 5 points measure of 30 items was adopted.
SPSS was used as the analysis method of date to deal with the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and analysis of Pearson correlation through statistical methods.
The results of research were as follows;
1. The self-concept on profession of the subjects was 2.70 in average based on 4, the full point and the point per field was: Mutual understanding 2.84, professional practice 2.83 and the degree of satisfaction 2.63.
2. The degree of performance of the nursing practice of the subjects was 3.97 in average based on 5, the full point, and the point per field was: Cooperative nursing practice performance 4.30, the practice on inter personal relation 4.10, general management 3.96 and independent nursing care 3.46.
3. The comparison of the degree of self-concept of profession according to general characteristic of the subjects showed the significant difference in age, marital status, clinical experience, current position, type of health care agency, total nursing experience, motivation of selecting the nursing profession, expected career in the future periods, and current satisfaction degree(p<.05), and the older nurses in age, married nurses, the nurses having clinical experience, of over 15-20 years, change nurses in national and public hospitals showed high self-concept on profession.
The nurses who showed most or just satisfaction with their job showed high self-concept on profession.
There was not significant difference of self concept in religion, educational background, and current working division(P<.05).
4. The result of comparison of the nursing practice perfor- mance according to general characteristic of the subjects showed that the group with long period of clinical experience(15-20 years), the aged group(over 30-40) and married group showed high satisfaction with current job saying very satisfied or fruitful with the high point in performance.
5. Between the performance of professional practice and the self-concept on professional job showed positive correlation(r=.554, p=.000).
The correlation between the self-concept on profession and the performance of professional practice showed that general management showed comparative positive correlation(r=.557, p=.000), and the nursing practice performance showed high correlation in professional practice(r=.557, p=.000), leadership (r=.508, p=.000), and flexibility(r=.534, =.000), which they belong to the field of professional self-concept.
As the above it was confirmed that there was the close relation between the self-concept of profession and the degree of performing nursing Practice in general hospital.
After all, programs to promote the self concept of profession are needed for the effective performance of nursing practice and the development of nurse as profession.
