The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among maternal separation anxiety, toddlers' temperament and their adaptation in a full-time day care center.
The subjects of the study were nine new toddlers who were 20∼27 months old (3 boys and 6 girls) and their mothers in the K day care center. The instruments used for this study were the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale(Cho Bok hee & Park sung ok, 1992) and Toddler Temperament Questionnaire: TTQ(Choi young hee, 1989). In order to analysis the patterns of toddlers' adaptation which used for Toddlers' Behavior Observation Instrument, each dyad was observed whenever they have attended the day care center for a month.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. Nine working Mothers showed in the middle degree of maternal separation anxiety
2. Nine toddlers were classified as easy temperament(E, G) and intermediate temperament(A, B, C, D, F, H, I). In subcategory of temperament, Quality of mood had a significant negative correlation(r= -.803, p< .01) with threshold of responsiveness and adaptability was positively correlated to distractibility(r= .827, p< .01).
3. During adaptation period, Adaptation response of toddlers were crying, searching for their mother, attachment behavior to object and other people. In case of response of their mother, some of them were sneaking out or saying 'bye' to their baby who was crying and out there.
Among 9 toddlers, 4 children were classified as fast adaptation (adaptation period: in 15 days), 3 children as Slow-to-warm-up adaptation(adaptation period: 15 ∼ 30 days) and 2 children as maladaptation(adaptation period: over 30 days).
4. Toddlers' adaptability, quality of mood, rhythmicity were related with Maternal separation anxiety and their adaptation in a full-time day care center.
