This study was done in aiming to furnish a data to consultation program on the basis of finding out an obesity child's social-phycholoy features being obtained by the comparative analysis of stress and self-esteem with a normal weight child.
The data collection was given by the structured questionnaire during twelve days, from 8th to 20th on september in 2000 at five primary schools located in Kyunggi-Do. Among the fifth and sixth class students in their schools, one hundred four obesity children(over 20% of obesity degree) and one hundred normal weight children were picked by random sampling.
The instruments used for this study were an Obesity-Stress Scale(Cho Yang Rae, 1997) and a self-esteem questionnaire including Self-Perception Profile(Harter, 1982). The methods used in analyzing the data collected by SPSS package program were frequency analysis, x2-test, ANOVA, and Person's Correlation Coefficient, adding a post-tested by Duncan's Multiple Range.
The summary of research results was as follows :
1. It is an outward apparence that is the greatest factor among stressors in obesity child's case, meanwhile is it scholarship in case of normal weight child.
2. An obesity child's stress was higher than a normal weight child's, which was consistent of statistical data. On the other hand, self-esteem do be shown the same as the above but was inconsistent statistically.
3. An obesity child's stress and self-esteem relation was shown to be in inverse proportion ratio so that the higher stress was the lower self-esteem.
4. As differences with character, an introspective obesity child's stress was the higher than an extrovertive, but self-esteem was in reverse.
As a result of this study, an obesity child's stress was higher than a normal weight child's stress, especially in physical and atmospheric sphere, also was self-esteem lower relatively.
Therefore it is necessary first to understand an obesity child's phychological-atmospheric matters for the efficient consultation program management, in particularly through not only a physical obesity handing but also a phychological-atmospheric nursing intervention.
