After 1994, there was a tremendous increase in the number of North Korean refugees in South Korean society. It is also anticipated that a large number of refugees from N.K will be accumulated during the Korean Reunification Process. This study was planned for the purpose of helping N.K. refugees in adapting to S.K. society.
The variables related to the successful adaptation in S.K society were classified into two broad categories. The first category included native social class, sex, age, and adaptation period. The second category included psychological factors that consist of characteristic traits (extraversion-introversion, neuroticism), locus of control, and coping strategies.
Subjects in this study consisted of 84 (61 men, 23 women, aged from 23-55 with a Mean of 34.6 and Standard Deviation of 9.1) N.K. refugees, and they are divided into three groups by their adaptation periods. Three hypothesis tested in this study were as follows; 1) Socio-biological factors would make significant influences on adjustment and mental health conditions. 2) Psychological factors would make significant influences on adjustment and would also concern mental
health conditions. 3) There would be differences in the levels of influence among factors related to the adjustment and mental conditions by adaptation period.
The results of this study revealed that 1) native social class and the adaptation period of socio-biological factors influence adjustment and mental health conditions, 2) all of the psychological factors influence adjustment and mental health conditions, 3) the factors that influences adjustment and mental health conditions are different by adaptation period. Therefore, the N.K. refugees who have a lower native social class, 2-3 year adaptation period, pessimistic coping strategies, and external locus of control would be more inferior in adjustment and mental health conditions.
