소통으로서 물고기의 상징 작업 연구 : 본인 작품을 중심으로 = (The) study of Fish as a Symbol of Communication

국문 초록 (Abstract)

예술은 현재의 사회적 요인과 함께 우리가 속하여 있는 사회 안에서 생각하고 느끼고 체험하면서 의식적으로나 무의식적으로 형성된 가치관을 바탕으로 표현되는 것이다.
오늘의 인간은 물질적인 풍요로움으로 인하여 정신적인 자유를 누리고 있는 것 처럼 보이지만 급속한 산업의 발달로 제도와 조직에 의하여 기능인의 모습으로 변모해 가고 있다. 이러한 사회구조 속에서 나타나는 인간심리의 특성은 사회조건과 상황에 적응하기 위해 조직의 한 부속으로서의 자신과 인간 본질로서의 자신의 이중적 구조 속에서 갈등과 소외, 자아상실 등의 위기의식과 양식, 진리가 부재 된 일상 속에서 공허감을 느끼며 살아가고 있다. 이것은 어떤 ‘이상성의 추구’라는 소박한 욕망을 떨쳐버리지 못하는 기대에서 오는 좌절감일 것이다.
인간을 비롯한 생물체는 진화의 과정을 겪고 당연히 더불어 환경변화, 가치, 주변의 변화를 겪는다. 그러나 문제는 그 과정 속에서 상호간의 변화의 폭과 속도는 불일치하고 그 안에서 문제는 비롯된다.
인간들에게 여유라는 말이 한낮 꿈으로만 여겨진다. 점점 한 부속으로서 자리 굳히기 위해 경계하고 촉각을 곤두세운다. 문명의 폭력성에 적응하는 인간을 포함한 개체들 생명의 수동적인 생명력에서 나는 존재 가치의 하락에 대한 위기 의식과 아픔을 느낀다.
본인은 이러한 주제 의식을 현실 비판의 메시지 표출이 아닌 물고기를 상징화하고 은유를 통해 의식적으로라도 필요한 무언가의 여유를 담아내고자 한다.
한국의 집에는 마당이라는 공유의 공간이 있었다. 담은 낮아서 안이 훤히 들여다 보이고 창문이나 대문은 자기 공유의 영역이 배타적 확인이라기 보다는 상호 융통과 호흡을 특성으로 하고 있다. 또한, 우리 음식문화의 다양한 용어들 가령 우려내고 고아내고 삭히는 문화는 이질적인 것의 상호 교섭과 그를 통한 맛의 창조로 특징화할 수 있으며 이러한 것들은 본인 작품의 기초로 삼는 것이라 할 수 있다.
수업이 많은 신의 창조물 중에서도 특히 본인의 관심을 끌었던 것은 바로 ‘물고기’였다. 그들의 다양한 생김새와 색채의 독특함은 물론이거니와 그리스도교 신앙안에서의 물고기가 상징하는 신학적인 의미의 중요성과 불교에서 말하는 방생의 상징, 전통 한옥의 헛간에서 풍요와 치유, 기복의 상징으로서의 목어 등은 본인을 매료시키기에 충분하였다.
우리들은 물고기란 단어가 물+고기의 합성어로서 물과 관련하여 그 뜻이 조건 되어짐을 생각해 볼 수 있다. 물고기와 그들의 삶의 공간인 ‘물’은 우리가 속한 ‘뭍' 의 세계처럼 또 하나의 축소된 우주를 보는 듯한 감흥을 안겨준다. ‘물’은 물고기가 숨을 쉴 수 있는 대기이고 우주이며 양식을 제공해 주는 <생명력이 내재된 공간>인 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 모태의 양수 속에서 출발한 우리 인간에게도 물은 생명의 근원지요, 생명력의 경이로움을 제시하는 상징으로까지 여겨진다.
본 논문은 ‘물고기의 꿈’이라는 주제의 작품들의 이론적 정립을 위해 연구되었다. 본인의 작품은 현대사회의 구조적인 현상으로 인한 인간의 심리를 나눔과 헌신 등의 상징을 내포하는 물고기에 이입하고 사진의 프린트와 오브제를 통해 인간심리와 인간내면에 잠재된 이상으로의 회귀에 대해 재가해보고 의식을 고찰하여 상징적 조형언어로 표현하였다.
본 연구를 통하여 현대를 살아가는 인간의 본질에 대하여 사유할 수 있었으며 본인의 작품 성향에 폭넓은 표현양식과 창작영역의 확대를 체험하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Art is a kind of expressions based on the values, which are formed consciously or unconsciously while people think, feel and experience in the society they belong to.
Though human beings of the present time seem to be enjoying spiritual freedom for material richness, they are degrading gradually to functional appurtenances as a result of rapid industrial development. Human beings in the current social structure have been forced to have a dual self, namely, a self as belongings of social situation for adaptation to it and a self as a human nature itself. And they experience such the sense of crisis as conflict, alienation, loss of self and emptiness in the daily life in which the truth is absent. These psychological characteristics may be named frustration from guess that there are no much chance of accord between 'the pursuit of ideal' and 'the adaptation to realities'.
All organisms including human beings naturally experience changes of environment, values and surroundings in the process of evolution. However, problems come from the discordance between width and pace of mutual changes.
A word of 'mental relaxation or composure', for human beings, is but a dream. In order to make their position as a belonging stable they have to be on the alert continuously. For the passive vitality of individuals including human beings which are being adapted to the violent civilization, I feel a sense of crisis and pain for a downfall in existential values.
With this subject, the present writer intends to represent consciously some kinds of composure people desire through symbolizing fish and using metaphors rather than expressing massage of the criticism toward the realities.
There was a shared space of 'Madang' in Korean house. The wall was low enough to look into the inside with ease. Windows or gate can be understood as means for mutual communications between inside and outside rather than exclusive re-affirmation of one's own shared domain. Additionally, the various food culture of Korea, for example 'soaking(우려내기)', 'boiling down(고아내기)' and 'causing to ferment(삭히기)', have characteristics that the different materials are blended together harmoniously and create a new taste as a result. The present writer makes this mechanism a foundation of my works.
Among a number of creatures of God, it is fish that attracted the present writer's interest. It is enough to fascinate the present writer that fish has not only a variety of shapes and unique colors but importance of theological eanings in the Christianity, implication of setting free in Buddhism, and sandfish placed in a barn of Korean traditional house as a symbol of the richness, cure and prayer for good fortunes.
We can understand with ease that the Korean word of '물고기(moolgoki-fish)' is a compound word '물(mool-water)' and '고기 (goki-animal)' and the word of 'goki' has a meaning of fish only when it is spoken with the word of 'mool'. Fish and 'water' as their life space and another small universe give similar impressions with those from people and 'land' they belong to. 'Water', for fish, is an atmosphere and universe where they can breathe in and 'a space with vitality' offering food to them. Furthermore, for human beings whose life is originated in amniotic fluid within mother's womb, water is the origin of life and is considered as a symbol of vital marvel.
The purpose of this thesis is to establish explanation theoretically for works with theme of 'the dream of fish'. In those works, the present writer imports the human mind comes from structural changes in modern society into fish symbolizing sharing and self-sacrifice. The present writer contemplates the latent desire of 'return to ideal' in the inside of human mind and then expresses it through symbolic formative arts, namely fish made of paper and then printed photo image on it and objet d'art.
By this study, I was given good opportunities not only to speculate about human nature in modern times but also to develop new expressional styles in my idiom and to extend limits of my creativity.
