A Study on the Not-Divorced-Family Children's Recognitions of Divorce and Peer-Attachment Divorced-family children suffer many maladjustments and difficulties because of their parents' divorce, and school-aged children among them have much more difficulties, especially in establishing peer relationships.
Though some causes of the relationship difficulty may be attributed to divorced-family children, the interrelationship between divorced- and not-divorced-family children is also important in this matter. So this thesis attempts to examine how not-divorced-family children recognize divorce and how the recognition influences companion relationship. Its method is by making researches on demographic-sociological and family traits, divorce recognition factors, family value factors, and peer attachment factors of the subjects of 722 not-divorced-family children, and its purpose is to help them establish smooth relationships with divorced-family children.
In order to attain the aim of the thesis, demographic-sociological factors such as sex, region, age, family income, religion, and parents' interrelationship are examined, and the existing research methods in Lee Jung-lim(2000)'s study on divorce recognition factors, Lee Myung-woo(2000)'s on family value factors, and Kim Ok(2000)'s on companion attachment factors are made use of, after being corrected and complemented for this thesis. For data processing SPSS for Window 9.5 was used.
The results analyzed for the thesis are as follows:
First, as a result of research on the subjects' differences in divorce recognition according to their demographic-sociological and family traits, such demographic-sociological traits as sex, age, and economic status shows the differences, and such family traits as parents' interrelationship, mentions on divorce, and approval or disapproval of divorce all shows meaningful differences in divorce recognition.
That is, boy students rather than girl students, and middle school students rather than elementary ones are tolerant to divorce; middle economic group rather than low and high ones is affirmative to divorce, while low and high economic groups are relatively negative and conservative to divorce. And the group recognizing better parents' interrelationship is more affirmative to divorce than the group recognizing worse one; the group whose parents more frequently mention divorce, and the group which think of higher possibility of parents' divorce are more tolerant to divorce.
Second, as a result of research on the subjects' differences in divorce recognition according to their divorce-related traits, such factors as the experience of hearing about divorce, the existence or nonexistence of divorced families in neighborhood, and the process of hearing about divorce all reveal meaningful differences.
The group which heard more about divorce, and the group in which there are more divorced families around are more tolerant to divorce; the group which heard about divorce in school (i.e. from teachers or friends) rather than by mass media, and the group which responded that he or she in person would solve the divorce problem are more tolerant to divorce.
Third, as a result of research on the subjects' differences in divorce recognition according to their family values, demographic-sociological traits such as sex, economic status, and family traits such as all family factors also shows meaningful differences. That is, boy students rather than girl students, middle economic group rather than low and high ones are more modern in family values; the group which has better parents' interrelationship, the group whose parents less frequently mention divorce during quarrels, and the group which opposes parents' divorce show more traditional values.
As a result of research on the differences in divorce recognition by dividing the cases into 3 family value groups such as traditional, middle, and modern, the traditional family value group shows the lowest average of divorce recognition, while the modern group is more tolerant to divorce.
Fourth, demographic-sociological factors, parents' interrelationship, family values, and divorce-related factors are shown to have influence on the recognition of peer-attachment with divorced-family children.
Among demographic-sociological factors, sex alone shows meaningful difference: girl students rather than boy students show higher average of companion attachment. The more frequently parents mention divorce during quarrels, and the more children think of high possibility of parents' divorce, the higher average they show of peer-attachment with divorced-family children.
The recognition of peer-attachment with divorced-family children is seen to show meaningful difference according to the different family value groups. That is, the more modern the family value is, the lower the average of peer- attachment is; the more traditional it is, the stronger the peer-attachment is.
Among the divorce-related factors, the sole factor of the existence or nonexistence of divorced families in neighborhood shows the difference in the recognition of peer-attachment, while other factors don't show differences according to the groups. The group with divorced families in neighborhood shows higher average of peer-attachment than the group without them. That is, respondents with divorced families around have more opportunities to observe divorce, and so they notice better the divorced-family children adapt to divorce situations, resulting in establishing better relationships and having stronger attachment with the latter.
Though the existing researches on divorce centered on divorced-family children, in order to help them adapt to situations, it is important to investigate not-divorced-family children's recognition of divorce, their family values, and peer-attachment with divorced-family children, helping the former understand correctly the latter's situations, and establish better relationships with them. My thesis has some significance in attempting to reveal this fact and to help the divorced and not-divorced-family children make better peer-relationships together.
