The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenological body view of Gabriel Marcel and to articulate its perspective into body experience of the ballet dancer in terms of the essential nature and internal structure of ballet dance experience. For doing this, the study focused its main concern into the performers own subjective experience in the process of doing ballet dance.
The experiential description and analysis method was used to take 30 ballet dancers lived experiences and to categorize their meaning from the phenomenological perspective.
The followings were articulated as the result of this study:
1. The nature of Marcels phenomenological body view is based on its main concern into existential faith of human-beings. His body view would be categorized as two different dimensions: 1) I have my body and 2) I am my body.
2. The nature and structure of performers body experiences in the process of ballet dance were expressed according to time, age, ballet experiences, and involvement. And body experience of having and being would be articulated in terms of the flow of time. During the performance, ballet dancers experienced their body experiences as the body-object and as the body-subject.
3. The experiential meanings of ballet performance of participants were categorized as follows: 1) body-object, 2) body as trained object, 3) awareness of physical space, 4) awareness of objective time, 5) limitation of body, 6) transcendence of space, 7) altered state of time. 8) body involvement, 9) transcendental body, and 10) extraordinary feeling of body. In addition, those of experiences are not the static one but dynamic one which are experienced by ballet performers.
In conclusion, it suggested that the understanding and share of the meaning of lived experience in the dimension of Gabriel Marcels phenomenological body view would be helpful for the educational context of dance among dancer, choreographer, and dance educator.
In addition, this study assured that the phenomenological approach would be proper methodological framework for researching the dance phenomena. In this perspective, ballet dance should be the source of having dynamic energy and primordial experience of human-being.
