This thesis centers on investigating the influence of music therapy on the improvement of sociability and adjustment of maladjusted elementary school children.
The subjects of this study were twenty-five out of seventy-four students who then attended the 3rd grade in an elementary school, Busan Metropolitan city. They were selected among those who had low scores on School adjustment test and the Peer Nomination Sociometric Tests and Rating Scale Sociometric Tests. They were divided into an experimental group and a controled group. While the former was given 10 sessions( twice each week and fifth minutes) of music therapy, the latter was not controled at all during the same period of time.
The scores for each child were analytically compared before and after the experiment and the mean, the standard deviation and their differences were analyzed with the independent T-test.
As a result of comparing the school adjustment scores before and after the music therapy, their teacher found that there was a significant difference in school adjustment scores between the two groups(p<.05), but no significant difference was recognized by themselves(p>.05). However, both of two groups showed significant differences in the Peer Nomination Sociometric Tests and Rating Scale Sociometric Tests before and after the music therapy(p<.05).
Although students themselves could not recognize significant differences in the school adjustment scores, their teacher and this study evidenced that music therapy may influence and improve the adjustment and sociability of maladjusted elementary school children.
