The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of group art therapy for increasing the adolescent criminals' self-esteem. Term of the therapeutic intervention was 12 weeks, one session was consist of 90 minutes. The subcategory of self-esteem was the area of peer relation, family relation and academic achievement.
The subject for this study consisted of 16 adolescent criminals who were imprisoned at a house of correction in Taegu. The subject was divided as experimental group, 8 and control group, 8. Independent variables were group( control and experimental), self-esteem(peer relation, family relation, and academic achievement), and pre/post test. Dependent variable was the difference between pre- and post-test of self-esteem.
The results were conducted using both quantity analysis and quality analysis. Quantity variable was analyzed by ANOVA and quality variable was analyzed focalizing upon client's response, the attitude for the therapeutic intervention, and the verbal response.
The following conclusions were obtained from the results:
First, the experimental group's self-esteem was significantly increased than the control group did after the group art therapy sessions.
Second, the self-esteem of peer relation in the experimental group was significantly improved after the therapeutic sessions. But there was no change for the control group.
Third, the self-esteem of family relation in the experimental group was significantly improved after the therapeutic sessions.
Fourth, the self-esteem of academic achievement in the experimental group was significantly improved after the therapeutic sessions.
The results suggested that the group art therapy was a very useful intervention to improve the adolescent criminals' self-esteem.
