The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Taekwon-do training on children s emotional development considering their sex and grade.
The subjects for the study sampled from Kangnam and Kangbuk area of Seoul in 1995 using multi-staged random sampling method. They were 4th-6th graders: 200 trained children and 200 black belt children of 8 Taekwon-do gymnasiums. And as a control group, 200 untrained children were sampled in elementary school.
The questionnaire used for collecting data was slightly modified from Kim(1985) s and tested its validity and reliability. Each questionnaire was filled out by the subject himself using administration method.
The collected data from 540 children were analyzed by SPSS/PC+ program. The statistical methods of reliability test, validity test, descriptive statistics, 3-way ANOVA, multiple classification analysis, and Scheffe post-hoc analysis were used for data analysis.
Form the analysis of collected data, the following conclusions were obtained:
1. The levels of emotional development of pure response according to the training degree are different by children s sex and grade. The boy s is more developed than the girl s, and 6th grader s than 4th and 5th in emotional development of pure response.
2. The levels of emotional development of fear response according to the training degree are different by children s sex and grade. The boy s is more developed than the girl s in emotional development of fear response. Also the higher the children s grade(age), the more emotion of fear response is developed.
3. The levels of emotional development of avoidence response according to the training degree are different by children s sex and grade. The boy s is more developed than the girl s, and 6th grader s than 4th and 5th in development of avoidence response.
4. The levels of emotional development of affection response according to the training degree are different by children s sex and grade. The boy s shows a higher developmental level than the girls and 6th graders are the first and 4th graders follow 5th graders in emotional development of affection response.
5. The levels of emotional development of sociability response according to the training degree are different by children s grade. Both boy s and girl s are almost the same to response in emotional development of sociability. But 6th grader s is the first in developmental degree. And then 4th graders follow 5th graders.
6. Although the le of emotional development of aggression response according to the training degree are different by grade there are no different results by sex. But in grade, 6th grader s is higher than 4th s and 5th s in emotional development of aggression response.
7. The levels of emotional development of delinquency response according to the training degree are different by both sex and grade. The results provide that the girl is higher degree in the emotional development of antisocial behavior than the boy. And in grade, 6th graders are also topped, followed by 5th graders in emotional development of delinquency response.
