The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of traditional Korean group games(Je-Gi play Peng-I play and Go-Nu play)on the development of childrens' socio-emotiomal.
For this purpose, the following research questions were investigated.
1. What effects will the traditional games have on the following aspects of the socio-emotional development of children?
1-1. What effects will the traditional games have on the child's developing his own socio-emotional identity, independent of the teacher?
1-2. What effects will the traditional games have on the child's development of inner control (self-discipline)?
1-3. What effects will the traditional games have on the child's development of interactive social skills with other children?
1-4. What effects will the traditional games have on the child's development of a sense of security in the kindergarten setting?
1-5. What effects will the traditional games have on the child's development of his motivation to achieve?
1-6. What effects will the traditional games have on the child's development of curiosity?
The subjects of this study were 40, 5 year old children (26 boys and 14 girls) in the kindergarten level of the elementary school located in An-dong City.
The study was conducted by Hu, hyung at the Korean Behavior Science Research Center using the Infant Socio-Emotional Development Measure. This tool was developed by Moon, Mi-ok in 1987. The research was done while the subjects were playing these traditional Korean games; Je-Gi, Peng-I, and Go-Nu.
The T- test was used to analyze the statistical significance of the differences between the experimental group and the control group.
The results were as follows.
1. The traditional games demonstrated a positive influence upon socio-emotional development.
1-1. The traditional games had a significant effect on the child's development of his own socio-emotional identity, independent of the teacher(p< .001)
1-2. The traditional games did not have an effect on the child's development of inner control.
1-3. The traditional games had a significant effect on the child's development of his interactive social skills with other children (p< .01).
1-4. The traditional games had a significant effect on the child's development of a sense of security in the kindergarten setting (p< .001).
1-5. The traditional games had a significant effect on the child's development of his motivation to achieve (p< .001).
1-6. The traditional games had a significant effect on the child's development of curiosity (p< .001).
