The purpose of this study is to find out psychological traits of PTSD patients through MMPI and to grope for the ways to consult and treat these people.
The issues of study are as follows.
    1. Does the difference of personality traits between the group of PTSD war veterans, the group of PTSD patients due to accidents, and the group of normal people show on the MMPI validity scale?
    2. Does the difference of personality traits between the group of PTSD war veterans, the group of PTSD patients due to accidents, and the group of normal people show on the neuropathy scale (Hs, D, Hy) of MMPI validity scale?
    3. Does the difference of personality traits between the group of PTSD war veterans, the group of PTSD patients due to accidents, and the group of normal people show on the MMPI's Pd, Mf, Pa, Pt, Sc, Ma, Si scales?
    4. Does the difference of personality trait show between Korean War veterans and Vietnam War veterans?
In this study, MMPI test was taken among 53 veterans, 44 accident victims, and 160 college students. The method of the MMPI test was Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test(mainly by Kim Young-hwan etc.) produced by Korean institute of clinical psycology and thus with the gained data, they contrasted and examined the difference among those groups by means of one-way analysis of variance. If the difference between the groups needed further attention, we did a post factor analysis using the Scheffe verification. For statistics, SPSS 9.0 was used.
The results of the study is as follows
First, On the MMPI validity scale, the group of PTSD war veterans scored higher than the group of PTSD patients due to accidents on the F scale(p<.05). The group of PTSD war veterans and the group of PTSD patients due to accidents scored higher than the group of normal people on the L and F scales(p<.05).
Second, On the neuropathy scales (Hs, D, Hy) of MMPI clinical scale, the group of PTSD patients due to accidents scored higher on Hs and Hy scales than the group of PTSD war veterans with the exception of D scale(p<.05). Also, the group of PTSD war veterans and the group of PTSD patients due to accidents scored noticeably higher than the group of normal people on Hs, D, and Hy scales(p<.05).
Third, Among the other MMPI scales (Pd, MF, Pa, Pt, Sc, Ma, Si), the group of PTSD war veterans scored noticeably higher than the group of PTSD patients due to accidents on the MF, Pa, Pt, Sc scales(p<.05), the group of PTSD war veterans scored noticeably higher than the group of normal people on all scales(p<.05), and the group of PTSD patients due to accidents scored noticeably higher than the group of normal people on the Pt, Sc, Ma scales(p<.05).
Fourth, There was no difference between Korean War and Vietnam War veterans on all scales(p>.05).
In another words, the group of PTSD war veterans and the group of PTSD patients due to accidents scored noticeably higher than the group of normal people on almost all scales with the exception of K scale. Such results are similar to the results of Stuker and Allain (1991). In conclusion, the personality traits of PTSD patients consists of noticeable fear, depression, negative thoughts, lack of self-confidence, doubtfulness, and evasion of personal relationships.
