In Korean film history, female audiences have been disregarded, being called "gomusin(rubber shoes) spectators" or "handkerchief spectators", even though they have always been the main consumers of the movies. Moreover, women have been ignored in the film history because(as) they have had few opportunities to participate in the process of film production, or(maybe) because little record is left of them.
This thesis reveals how the modernization of Korea in the '60s changed the life of Korean women and reconstructed the women's experience of modernity during that period, especially focusing on the relationship between the women and Korean movies of the '60s.
It isn't sufficient to explain with the institutional historic materials when we reconstruct women's experience of modernity within the relationship between women and movies. In attempt to fill the gap between the formal historiography and the informal life of the women, this thesis used woman magazine articles and woman section in daily newspapers, advertisements and movie posters as historical materials.
The modernity experience of Korean women in the '60s can be explained in the context of the modern history of Korea. The modernization of Korea, which was built through the experience of colonization, division of the country and the war within the same nation, was quite different from that of the west. Instead of severance from the tradition, the modernization of Korea was actually based on it. During the period of modernization, it was patriarchism that was central in Korean women's experience of modernity, bringing about such experiences as the division of public and private spheres, manifestation of consumerism, and re-structurization of patriarchy.
Korean women were summoned in two ways. On the one hand, new identity as a modernized wise mother and wife(賢母良妻) was called for of the women for the sake of efficiency of modernization. On the other hand, Korean women experienced the breakdown of patriarchism. The increase of the woman's education and woman emplyoment, proliferation of consumerism gave the Korean women a chance to establish a modernized identity.
Korean movies, which were popularized in the late '50s and was at their peak in the '60s, reveals the crevice and conflict of the Korean society and patriarchism. At the same time, it played an important role in suturing that crevice, and restructuring and stabilizing the patriarchism for the modernization of total-whole-society. Korean woman spectator was able to establish her modernized identity in the process of negotiation and compromise with these two ways that modernization called for her through the movie-going.
Moreover, movie going enabled married woman to participate in the imagined public sphere whom their activity were limited within the private sphere. This participation let the women confront with patriarchism which demanded them to meet the dual standards in the moment of coexisting tradition with modern. Through the process of modernization, the Korean woman gradually changed and got modernized. Even though this transformation wasn't radical, it could still be seen in the movies and in the discourse on the women in the '60s.
