The purpose of this study is to investigate the number representation according to the rational counting abilties of young children based on their drawing, writing, and verbal comments about the concept of quantity amount, such as more, fewer and same.
The problems of this study based on the purpose are as follow:
1. Are there any differences in number representation depending on the rational counting abilities of young children?
1) Are there any differences in pictorial number representation process based on the rational counting abilities of young children?
2) Are there any differences in symbolic number representation process based on the rational counting abilities of young children?
3) Are there any differences in verbal number representation process based on the rational counting abilities of young children?
2. Are there any differences in preference of number representation type based on the rational counting abilities of young children?
The subjects are 120 preschoolers from two different kindergartens in Seoul : three-, four-, and five-year-old. The 1:1 interview method was used to test their number representation and their rational counting ability. The data was collected and statistics of the results were analyzed. The result of rational counting ability test showed a singular increase distribution curve from 6 to 22. The researcher divided the pool into three levels with six points separating each level and checked the number of children in the first level. Since the number of children in the first level were 40, the researcher randomly selected 40 children from level two and three and came up with the 120 children as the final target of this study.
In number representation test, children were expected to represent changed amount and the results were collected into three groups of pictorial, symbolic, and verbal representation.
On the changed amount question, category of number representation types (pictorial, symbolic and verbal representation) performance were defined through sampling commonness of each number representation from the test results. The analyzed results were categorized based on number representation types and systemized by development levels to be divided in to four levels, and credited from one to four points with different weights from one to four points based on pictorial, symbolic and verbal representation.
The relationship between the number representation type performance and rational counting ability was analyzed One-Way Repeated Measure ANOVA. For post-hoc test used for the relationship between rational counting ability and the number representation types (pictorial, symbolic and verbal representation).
The preference of number representation type based on rational counting ability was observed accordind to the number representation with highest priority (pictorial, symbolic, and verbal). The data were analyzed by the frequencies percentage, and χ2 test.
The analyzed results of the research are as follows:
First, there were statistically significant differences in the relationship between rational counting ability and number representation type (pictorial, symbolic and verbal representation), indicated that there were some statistically significant differences among the rational counting ability. Based on the results, the breakdown of number representation type (pictorial, symbolic and verbal representation) the subdivided differences in the performance levels based on each number representation type by the groups of the rational counting abilities are as follows :
The pictorial number representation performance level of young children was different according to the counting ability level and proportionally increased with the counting ability level. Young children in the first level of counting ability mostly reside in the second level of pictorial number representation. Those in the second level of counting ability were in the third level of pictorial number representation, while those in the third level of counting ability almost reached the fourth level of pictorial number representation.
Young children's the symbolic number representation performance level was different according to the counting ability level and proportionally increased with the counting ability level. Young children in the first level of counting were in between the first and second level of symbolic number representation. Those in the second level of counting ability were moving from the second level to the third level of symbolic number representation, while those in the third level of counting ability were in between the third and fourth level of symbolic number representation.
Young children's the verbal number representation performance level was different according to the counting ability level and proportionally increased with the counting ability level. Young children in the first level of counting ability were moving from the first level to the second level of verbal number representation. Those in the second level of counting ability were in moving from the second level to the third level of verbal number representation, while those in the third level of counting ability were in between the third and fourth level of verbal number representation.
These results show that through direct and indirect experiences with number, young children begin to obtain their rational counting abilities and the concept of numbers, which allows them to use different number representation. Even in the most primitive level of rational counting ability, young children show the best performance in pictorial representation. As the level of rational counting ability increases, the pictorial representation becomes more elaborated. With the increase in counting ability, young children experience and apply symbolic and verbal representation as well as pictorial representation as they realize the usefulness of symbolic and verbal representation in communicating with others.
Second, the relationship between rational counting ability and the preference of number representation type (pictorial, symbolic and verbal representation) turned out to be statistically significant.
The order of the most preferable number representation type by young children was pictorial representation followed by symbolic representation and verbal representation, but there were some slight difference in the preferences depending on their rational counting ability. With the development of the counting ability, young children master pictorial representation by directly experiencing and understanding numbers. With such understanding, children realize the notion of number and use symbolic representation and verbal representation, expressing number with words.
In examining the result of counting ability, children in the first level of counting ability prefer pictorial representation to the other in number representation types. Children in the second level still prefer pictorial representation, but do select symbolic and verbal representation with fairly high percentages. Children in the third level prefer symbolic representation and verbal representation to a lesser degree, but generally show little interest in pictorial representation. These changes mean that as children pick up the notion of numbers, they face diverse experiences with numbers, enabling them to use different types in representing quantities with numbers and symbols. At the same time, the children realize the usefulness of different representation type in communicating with others and begin to learn how to explain numbers with words.
