This study is a descriptive study of correlation to find old women's sex life and their understanding of sex and identify its influence on their life satisfaction.
As subjects, old women over 60 years of age were received organized questionnaires from the 12th of March to the 4th of April, 2002, what we call significance sampling, and one to one interview was used for data collection in the case of illiteracy. Of the total 200 questionnai collected, just 158 pieces available were used for analysis.
A SPSSWIN program was used for data analysis with frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise Multiple Regression, with the reliability of instrument measured with validation and factor analysis by Cronbach's Alpha. The result of the study is as follows;
1. Regarding the realities of sex life, it is found that 44.3% of those married and with a spouse, and 44.3% of those without spouse have sex. For satisfaction with marriage, 65.8% of respondents said to be 'normal', and 23.7% to be 'satisfied'. 74.1% of respondents said to be 'normal' about sex life when they were young, while 18.4% said to 'have sex at present', showing one time per month, 1.5 time a month on average, with 96.6% of those with spouse.
That they have no sex constitutes 81.6%, and 62.8% comes to the case of those without spouse. For a desire to have sex, 81.6% of respondents said that 'they lose a desire to have sex, although 46.8% of those respondents said to be 'normal' health condition.
For altered sex life, there is positive response, 93%, that it is natural to change sex life as it gets old. For health condition, 'normal' is 46.8%, while 'bad' and 'a little bad' is 31% respectively. 77.2% of respondents said there is no need of advise for sex. 1.3% is those who experienced sex with others besides a spouse. In case of no sex life at present, it is found that they had sex when they were in their the sixties and over, 41.9%, and in their fifties, 25.6%.
2. For the understanding of sex, it averages 2 out of 4 points. By sub-variables, it indicates 2.15 points for sex life behavior, 2.02 points for the importance of sex life, and 1.84 points for a desire to have sex.
3. The life satisfaction of subjects is 2.21 points, specifically showing 2.10for attitude to aging, 2,16 for self-achievement,2.27for self-respect,
and 2.35 for satisfaction with realities, the highest points.
4. For relations among sex life realities and its understanding and life satisfaction, it is found to be r=.192(p<.05) for whether or not they have sex and its feeling, and r=.163(p<.05) for the understanding of sex. Also there is significance, r=.180(p<.05) in relation between a desire to have sex and the understanding of sex. There is no relation between the sex experience and life satisfaction.
5. For the understanding of sex, those with no religion are found to be positive, Christians to look at sex poorly, and those who have sex at present to be highly understood(p<.05). Besides, there is positive understanding of sex for those enduring a desire to have sex(p<.05).
For Life Satisfaction, it is increased for those with higher allowances.(p<.05).
The better health condition, the more positively they look at sex, and it is also increased by the satisfied marriage(p<.001).
6. There is no significant correlation between sex understanding and life satisfaction. But the result of examining it by understanding level shows that those with higher understanding of sex show higher life satisfaction rather than those with lower level of understanding(p<.05).
7. The variable influencing on the understanding of sex is whether or not they have sex and a desire to have sex. The variable important in life satisfaction includes marriage satisfaction and health condition.
In conclusion, considering the old with higher understanding of sex are more satisfied with life, and continuous sex life has positive influence on elderly people's understanding of sex, women after menopause need to approach sex individually, taking the sense of values, health, and personal difference, rather than to hide their sexuality, suppressing desires to have sex and behavior, which is a prejudice against sex because people think them to be old.
Also all the members of a society including family and old women has to do mental switchover that old people's sex life serves as an important energy in their life, making them feel pleasure and lead positive and happy living.
