As technologies develop more and more, broadcasting continues to undergo change, playing a role of necessity or 'friend' for our modern man. Televiewers, thus, become familar with MCs. This study starts from the question 'what are MCs to broadcasting?'
Mcluhan's theory of communication beginning from expansion of human tools is still effective in explaining the conditions of broadcasting. Just as hands are expanded to carry a bag or as if feet are expanded to wear footwear, so the human body can be expanded to be broadcasted. In regard to spatial and visual communications, who are the broadcasting MCs? Are they the subjects of body expressions? Let's explore the answers to these questions.
In this digital age, more than one technology is combined to create a fusion form. Like Marshall Mcluhan's statement 'the medium is the message', media may be compared with a water container. Just as the form of water differs depending on the shape of its container, so do forms and content of messages are affected by the characteristics of media. Thus, a medium itself has a unique socio-cultural value.
Star MCs are now being born, while broadcasting companies are eager to recruit popular entertainers as MCs. Although MCs seem to play an important role in broadcasting, they are merely tools for the broadcasting programs that form part of the entire broadcasting mechanism. In short, MCs are mere extensions of the televiewers. MCs may be categorised into announcers, interviewers, hosts, MCs proper, masters, interpreters and VJ's. Although their roles look similar, they play quite different roles depending on their role-play genres.
Uses of MCs differ depending on broadcasting technologies used. Before the invention of the radio, MCs had played a role of hosting ceremonies. After the radio was invented, MCs were closer to the audience as 'broadcasting masters'. They relied entirely on voice to communicate with the audience.
Next, the television became popular and visual communication began for broadcasting. Television technology developed from the air broadcasting to cable, satellite and digital and through this change the MC role has changed accordingly. Today, the virtual character MCs and Avatas are beginning to emerge.
If we review carefully the MCs featured in a media, we can understand the bodily expressions of the age, the same way as we know about the culture of an age by reviewing the popular singers of that era. This study aims to review what cultural value MCs bodily expressions or contentware have. In particular, as we face a virtual reality in the space of image, broadcasting MCs are being used in quite a different space and time, which suggests that the world experienced by the televiewers is expanding more and more.
In these times, we cannot think about a television without a computer. It is no exaggeration to say that we meet the world on the screen in this digital media age. We get information from the screen, meet people and work on the screen, and engage ourselves with the screen in our everyday life.
Everything is being done through the screen or 'window'. We are living in the age when we cannot do anything without a window.
