The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of mutual scribble story making on the improvement of the problem behavior of child with selective mutism. The research questions were posed as follows:
    1. Is the mutual scribble story making effective for improving the depression, anxiety and social withdrawal of child with selective mutism?
    2. Does the mutual scribble story making contribute to developing the social skills and self-expression of child with selective mutism?
    3. Does the mutual scribble story making have any effect on changing the problem behavior of child with selective mutism that take place in each session?
The subjects in this study were a 12-year-old girl child who turned out to have selective mutism after she was tested by Christiansen's teacher observation list and DSM - N selective music diagnostic standard.
The experiment was conducted for two weeks during the summer vacation from July 25 through August 4, 2001, and for seven months from September 19, 2001, through February 15, 2002. During the vacation, the program was implemented eight times for two weeks, and after the vacation, it's implemented once a week.
The analytic methods utilized in this study were as below:
First, the behavioral evaluation scale for child and youth was employed in pretest and posttest to see whether there were any changes in her depression/anxiety and social withdrawal. And a comparative analysis was carried out over the changes of depression/anxiety scale, social withdrawal scale and internalization scale. HTP, K - HTP and KSD were implemented in both pretest and posttest, and the results were analyzed and interpreted according to specific criteria.
Second, as for the change of social skills, the social skills scale was used in both pretest and posttest. The scores of individual items and total marks were compared between the two tests, and the way she expressed herself was observed in every session.
Third, regarding problem behavior, the unique features of her problem behaviors were described in each session, and how the problem behaviors altered in the beginning, middle, and final stages of the experiment was examined.
The findings of this study were as follows:
First, the mutual scribble story making served to lesson the social withdrawal and depression/anxiety of the child with selective mutism.
Second, the mutual scribble story making contributed to develop the social skills and self-expression of the child with selective mutism.
Third, the mutual scribble story making brought a positive change to the problem behaviors of the child with selective mutism, as the program improved the confidence and emotional stability of the child, stimulated her need for human relations, and furthered her communicative skills.
