The purpose of this study is to examine the relations between parents' communication styles and middle school students' self-esteem and adaptation to school life.
The questions addressed for the purpose of the research are :

2. Which relation is there between parents' communication styles and adaptation to school life ?
3. Which relation is there between self-esteem and adaptation to school life ?
Data was collected from 486 third graders in 6 middle schools randomly selected in Daejon metropolitan city. The subject was composed of 486 boys and 233 girls.
The results are :
First, there is the significant relation between the type of parent-adolescents communication and the measure of the adolescent's self-esteem. The average of open-type group is higher than that of problem-type group.
Second, there is the significant relation between the type of parent-adolescents communication and the measure of adaptation to school life. The scores of open type group are higher than those of problem type group except 'school regulations' scale.
Third, there is the relativity between self-esteem and adaptation to school life.
So the conclusions can be drawn as follows:
First, the opener parent-adolescents communication styles were, the higher self-esteem was.
Second, the opener parent-adolescent communication styles were the better adaptation to school life was.
Third, the higher students' esteem was, the better their adaptation to school life.
