A human being is an animal, requiring medicine. According to the fact that the medicine was utilized to maintain health and life 50 tho- usand years ago, the utilization of medicine would be a condition of culture. However, researches conducted on this field is currently insuff- icient in Korean anthropology and folklore, and this research would be the first trial to fill up the gap. However, since it is impossible to han- dle all medicines at once, I have chosen ssuk(artemisia), which is used all over the world and which is introduced in the myth of national foundation as a topic of the research.
Following are the contents of this research. Firstly, Chapter I intro- duces and defines the methodology and its concepts utilized in this research along with proposing the problem, introduction on background for topic selection, and precedent researches.
Chapter Ⅱ explains about the reason why ssuk could only be under- stood as a conceptual existence that refers to plants of ssuk types and the reason why it is difficult to unify botanical and cultural classi- fication concept, despite the fact that the classification of ingredients or the species must be clear, in order to investigate about ethnopharma- cology and ethnobotany.
Chapter Ⅲ investigates about how ssuk was utilized by researching the ancient Chinese documents. The reason is because in order to understand historical expansion process of Korean culture about ssuk, it is necessary to refer to Chinese documents with long history of cultural exchange. Particularly, the study of Chinese medicine had an important role in establishing Korean traditional medicine system. Thus, it is a prerequisite to have basic understanding about ssuk and to stu- dy about its therapy. Through this process, it was proven that ssuk was effective in female physiological functions and is very effective in diverse diseases including hemostasis and extermination of insects. Due to such functions of ssuk, it was described to be miraculous medicine since long ago.
Also, Koreans also promoted ssuk to be a type of plants with incan- tation ability, which transformed a bear into human in the myth of national foundation, along with understanding its miraculous effectiv- eness. Also, the symbolism obtained through diverse documentary and comparative cultural reference and site investigation could be defined as ‘saenam(rebirth)’, which could be also verified in Korean shamanism and other the rites of passage. ‘saenam’ refers to the rebirth or change in position, which could also be well compared with ssuk utilization cases of aboriginals of ancient Greece or America. Furthermore, I have tried to interpret traditional ceremony functionally and have included simple introduction in diverse utilization of ssuk in modern society.
Chapter Ⅳ discusses about how the perception regarding the diverse effectiveness and perception of ssuk as a miraculous medicine under- stood in traditional society started to be forgotten through the exten- sion of biomedicine of the Western world. The situation of which trad- itional medicine system of each region all over the world faced was no exception for ssuk. And since the mid-1990’s, diverse research and applicative products utilizing ssuk started to be produced. It was when the perception of ssuk as miraculous medicine spread through the mass media. I have introduced Kanghwa province to obtain information about the Kanghwa yak-ssuk(medicinal artemisia), which is acknowle- dged for its best quality in Korea.
Ssuk was utilized as medicine in many regions all over the world. Particularly, in northeast Asia, it was utilized in traditional ceremony and rituals as well as being utilized for food, medicine, and necessity of life. And in Korea, it was also introduced in the myth of national foundation. However, religious and mythical symbol-mostly relevant to resurrection-endowed in ssuk, gradually became extinct or became secularized and changed into a method of excessively advertising the medicinal effect.
