The human race is now enjoying unprecedented affluence. This is because businesses have faithfully stuck to the marketing concept, which requires them to find and fulfill the wants and needs of consumers that were previously unrecognized, bringing about the growth of businesses and the economy. However, the time has passed when the marketing concept was sufficient for the long-term growth of businesses. Doubts have also been raised to whether the traditional concept of marketing can solve today's various social problems efficiently. Hence, in recent years, the concept of societal marketing, emphasizing long-term social welfare, has appeared and is quickly becoming the new trend. One area gaining importance amidst this new trend is the environment. As pollution became an increasingly serious social problem, the importance of green marketing and environmental ads has also grown. Unfortunately, studies on these subjects have not increased accordingly, leaving us with littl! e academic understanding of environmental ads.
This study analyzes environmental ads in South Korean newspapers to see how they have changed over the years. After reviewing previous studies on green marketing and environmental advertising, I examined how green marketing appeared in South Korean newspapers. Using 151 environmental ads that appeared in South Korean newspapers between January of 1998 and April of 2002, I categorized environmental ads according to industry, ad types, themes, messages, headlines, and visual effects. I have also analyzed these ads empirically, trying to clarify the characteristics and elements of various types of environmental ads and track their changes over the years.
The results are as follows:
First, industry-wise, public or institutional ads comprised 76.8% of all environmental ads, followed by living goods (9.3%), electronics and communication (2.0%), finance and services (1.3%), construction (2.6%), and others (7.9% ). Topping the list were public or institutional ads, which intend to build an overall favorable image about the corporation and stimulate the consumption of all corporate goods indirectly rather than promote specific products.
Second, corporate ads comprised 55.6% of all environmental ads, followed by media thematic ads (15.2%), product ads (13.9%), and event ads (13.2%). While the proportion of corporate ads was especially large in institutional ads (66.4%), the proportion of product ads was large in ads for the living goods industry and the electronics and communication industry (64.3%). It is clear that environment ads are heavily oriented towards corporations. Public or institutional ads focused most heavily on stressing abstract notions or philosophies to enhance the image of their firms rather than emphasizing environment-friendly behavior on the consumers part. Corporations also participated in media thematic ads through sponsorships. Ads promoting durable goods such as living goods or electronics and communication goods preferred product ads. They usually stressed their relative advantage over other products regarding environment-friendly technology or exhibited environment related ! awards or certifications they received.
Third, general ads (39.1%) about the environment appeared more frequently than ads on specific issues such as water pollution (16.6%), preserving natural sources and decreasing waste (12.6%), preserving the woods (9.9%), air pollution (5.3%), and soil pollution (1.3%). Many ads still focus only on educating the public of how important the environment is on the general level, rather than mentioning specific environmental problems. Within the public or institutional ad category, general ads were most frequent at 42.2%, followed by ads on water pollution (16.4%), preserving woods (12.1%), preserving natural sources and decreasing waste (11.2%), and air or soil pollution (6.9%). In the living goods category, general ads and ads on water quality maintenance were most frequent at 28.6%.
Fourth, image-oriented ads (45.7%) outnumbered fact-oriented ads (19%), process-oriented ads (10.6%), and product-oriented ads (9.9%) by far. In the public or institutional ad category, image-oriented ads were even more popular at 49.1%, followed by fact-oriented ads (14.7%), process-oriented ads (12.9%), and product-oriented ads (3.4%). In the living goods category, image-oriented ads (50.0%) were preferred over product-oriented ads (28.6%). However, in electronics and communication ads, product-oriented ads were most popular (66.7%). Most firms using environmental ads are passively following the global trend of enhanced environmental awareness. Rather than promoting their environment-friendly products or manufacturing processes based on specific facts, they are merely promoting an overall environment-friendly image.
Fifth, at 44.4%, news announcement-like headlines appeared more frequently than argumentative or suggestive headlines (23.2%), assertive headlines (14.6%), and testifying or empirical headlines (7.9%).
Finally, the most preferred visual effects of environmental ads were animations and graphics (39.1%), followed by scenic photographs (19.2%) and a mix of the two (19.2%). There were also ads - directly showing their products, machines or buildings - that utilized artificial creations, animals and plants, or people. Animations and graphics were most popular in living goods ads (42.9%), but were also popular in public or institutional ads (40.5%). Artificial creations were most preferred in electronics and communication ads (66.7%), which are usually more product-oriented. Although one might expect ads trying to evoke a healthy environment to use visions of the nature or animals and plants, many ads - including the most populous public and institutional ads - preferred animations and graphics.
This thesis is an empirical study exploring the current state and characteristics of environmental ads in South Korea. I can only hope that it may be of some help to those producing environmental ads in the future.
