Since the full-scale economic development in the early 1960's, the Korean economy has recorded a remarkable growth and finally, has become a model economy in the world. Such a remarkable growth may be attributable to government's effective policies and companies' incessant endeavors. In particular, it cannot be denied that despite the short history and poor business environment, our companies have contributed greatly to the national wealth. Nevertheless, the criticism that companies, particularly the conglomerates have not played a positive role persists still. Thus, companies should be obliged to defend themselves against such a criticism, while being engaged in their businesses and exploring a more positive way to discharge their social obligations.
As the society develops, companies are requested to depart from their conventional way of thinking to contribute to the development of the community, in order to coexist with it. Thus, many companies are making efforts to serve the society. With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at reviewing the effects of companies' social services on the community. The results of this study can be summarized as follows;
First, the hypothesis that there would be difference of perception of companies' social services between companies' staff and community people was adopted in terms of companies' sense of pride and their images. In other words, there was found some significant difference of the perception of companies' social services between company employees and community people. However, there was found no difference of the perception of the social volunteer service spirit between two groups.
Second, there was found some significant difference of the perception of the community problems between companies' staff and community people, but there was found no significant difference of the perception of the economic condition between two groups.
Third, there was found some significant difference of the perception of the solutions to the community problems depending sexes, but there was no significant difference of the perception of the community economy. On the other hand, there was no significant difference of the perception of social issues and community economy depending on subjects' academic backgrounds, which suggests that people's view of social issues and community economy does not differ much depending on academic backgrounds.
Fourth, the factor of companies' social services affecting the community economy most was sense of pride, followed by service spirit and image in their order.
Fifth, the factor of companies' social services affecting the solution of community problems was sense of pride, followed by image and service spirit in their order.
Based on the above findings, the following reform measures have been suggested;
First, companies are requested to approach their social services not only from the view of cost but from viewpoints of strategic social services and investment in the community.
Second, it is deemed necessary to activate the volunteer services in order to solve the community problems or explore the ways to reinvigorate the community economy, while staging a mental awareness campaign.
Third, in order to spread companies' social services positively, it is deemed essential to enhance company staff's and people's sense of pride, while promoting the image of the companies as social service providers.
Fourth, it is necessary for not only the large companies but also small and medium companies to voluntarily participate in the community services, and in this regard, the government is urged to design some effective measures to encourage private companies to perform their social services positively.
Fifth, it is deemed necessary to allow the companies to publicize their images by posting their tradenames, donations and service programs at beneficiaries' properties, while exploring diverse P.R. measures to encourage them to voluntarily participate in the social services.
Lastly, it is believed that if the above measures should be adopted, more companies are encouraged to participate in the social services only to create a sound community.
