The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the club activities and social adaptation of the youth by understanding their club activities and its correlation with their objects of social adaptation such as individual, school, family and society.
To do the study, I selected samples out of the high school students who are participating in the club leisure activities of highschool in Seoul area in 2001 through stratified cluster random sampling. And the final number of samples is 531.
I used the questionnaire to collect the data for the instrument of measurement; Types of club activities (Kim, Kwang-deuk, 1997), Levels of club activities (Kim, Ji-yeon, 2000), and Sheets to examine the social adaptation (Kim, Bong-so, 1975; Cho, Young-je, 1994). Statistics technique used to analyze the data was ANCOVA, post-hoc test by Scheffe method and multiple regression analysis.
The conclusion can be summarized as follows.
1. The level of club leisure activities and the social adaptation vary partly according to the social demographic characteristics. Women showed higher degree of spontaneity, satisfaction, organizing ability in the level of club leisure activities. And the college graduate showed higher degree of spontaneity and satisfaction than the high school graduate in the level of education. Men showed higher degree of adaptation to the family issues than women in the social adaptation. And groups whose parents have shorter academic career showed higher degree of adaptation to school and social issues.
2. The level of spare time activities varies partly according to the types of club leisure activities of the youth. Spontaneity in club and spare time activities was higher in appreciation and viewing than in amusement and social intercourse. In the degree of satisfaction during spare time, hobbies and cultivation were higher than amusement and social intercourse. And appreciation and viewing were higher than the sports and exercises.
3. Social adaptation varies partly according to the types of club leisure activities of youth. In the adaptation to family issues, sports and exercises were higher than hobbies and cultivation. Amusement and social intercourse were higher than hobbies and cultivation. In the adaptation to social issues, sports and exercises were higher than hobbies and cultivation or amusement and social intercourse or appreciation and viewing.
4. The level of club leisure activities affects partly to the social adaptation of youth. As the degree of satisfaction in the club activities becomes higher and as the organizing ability becomes lower, the degree of adaptation to family becomes higher. And the higher the level of problem solving in the club activities becomes, the higher the adaptation to the social issues becomes.
