This study was carried out to know necessary and effective or practical direction of sex education at elementary school in Seoul and local area. Data for the study were collected by questionnaires which survey the perceptions and opinions for the change of body, utility of mass communication and sex education at home and school. The number of respondents were 389(male and female students in 6th year class of 6 elementary schools).
The purpose of this study was to find out feasibility and necessity of sex education at school.
The data were statistically analyzed by frequency, proportion and chi-square test with SAS Ver 8.1 computer program.
The results are as follows:
1. There was no statistical significance for degree of physical maturity ( for example, manifestation of secondary sex character, wet dream and experience degree of wet dream or menstruation) according to regional difference. However, we found that frequency of menstruation was more than one of wet dream, because maturity of female students was faster than one of male.
2. For students in 6th year class of elementary school, utility of mass communication related sex was not so high. The more students were experience wet dream or menstruation, the better students were use mass communication. And the study showed that society must bemake a sound and moral environment, judging from the fact that they felt an impulse to imitate the action when they watched the scene by chance.
3. Most of female students acquired sexual information from their parents. But many male got it from teacher, TV, and mass communication. This shows that fathers must do more positive activity in the sex education at home.
4. In general, students had sex education of one to three times for a school term. The students in Seoul had more times of sex education than ones in local area. But there was no significant difference in comparison of interest in the contents of sex education according to students in both areas. This imply that the contents, teaching method or time of sex education is more important than frequency of sex education.
5. Students were interested in association with opposite sex and how to protect themselves from sexual violation. They hoped that the time for sex education is 5th to 6th year class and have it separately from other gender.
