Television viewers take their own attitudes when they watch TV. This thesis centered its main point on the viewers' media using motives and satisfaction degrees. In order to get answers, the questionnaire survey was conducted by targeting 300 televiewers of Yeosu citizens. The survey was administered for 7 days from Nov. 20 through Nov. 26, 2000, where statistical techniques such as frequency analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, and t-test were used.
This study was investigated in terms of the following 3 questions and 4 hypotheses.
Research Question 1 : What are the characteristics of viewing patterns of local television?
Hypothesis 1-1 : The channel preference may be different according to the using motives.
Hypothesis 1-2 : The channel preference may be different according to the watching purposes.
Research Question 2 : What are the determinants of satisfaction degree in watching local programs?
Hypothesis 2 : The satisfaction degree may be different according to the expected level.
Research Question 3 : What are the dissatisfaction factors against the local television programs?
Hypothesis 3 : The dissatisfaction degree may be different according to the living standards.
As a result, Research Question 1 found that Yeosu citizens were watching 3 hours or more a day and that they wanted to watch one or two hour local programs which were broadcasted between 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock in the morning and between 5:30 and 9 o'clock in the evening. It also appeared that the main motives of watching local TV was to get the new local informations. Hypothesis 1-1 and Hypothesis 1-2 were supported statistically drawing out the significant result. This meant that Yeosu viewers selected the preferable channel according to the using motives or watching purposes.
In relation with Research Question 2, it was found that the viewers' greatest satisfaction in the local TV programs had been gained from speedy news programs. Hypothesis 2 proved this fact statistically, which meant that Yeosu viewers showed different responses between the satisfaction and the expected degree.
Research Question 3 showed that Yeosu viewers' dissatisfactions were due to the news anchors and the program moderators' unskilled attitude as well as the lack of professional knowledge. It also indicated that, without improving these problems, the local television couldn't satisfy the local viewers. The Hypothesis 3 supported this fact statistically, which meant that the dissatisfaction factors appeared to be diverse according to the living standards.
Therefore, the findings proved that these questions and hypotheses which were established for carrying out this study were meaningful. The reason was that the degree of satisfaction or dissatisfaction together with the local viewers' watching attitudes were confirmed by the results of the questionnaire analysis and the verification of the hypotheses. In addition, this study could find another meaning in investigating the TV watching attitude targeting the viewers of Yeosu area, who had the identical life sphere and the cultural background.
Finally, it could be said that a few limitations were still remained in this thesis. Firstly, subjectivity might have been intervened because the respondents wrote down for themselves in this questionnaire survey. Secondly, there might have been some parts which could not be prepared comprehensively in order to suit the real situation of the local viewers in Yeosu area in planning this questionnaire.
