The goal of this research is to find a solution to the normalization of commercial high school education and to the more desirable educational guidance for the students by analyzing the correlations between the students, home environment, adaptability to school, academic achievement and their career plan.
For this study, 216 second graders were sampled from a commercial high school in Uijeongbu city. This research is based on the analysis of questionnaires on the respondents' home background and adaptability to school and their recent academic records. SPSS 10 statistical package was used and frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, cross analysis, Chi-square test, analysis of variance and correlation analysis were conducted for the research.
The results of this study are as follows;
In general, the home background of commercial high school students is relatively good and does not have close relationship with the adaptability to school and academic achievement. However, significant correlation has been found between students' relationship with teachers and their academic achievement., which means more importance should be emphasized on teacher's role.
The most significant fact revealed from this study is that the home environment has close relationship with a student's career plan. In other words, a student's home background plays an as much important part as his aptitude, desire, and interest in planning his future.
For example, instead of going to college or study something that they are interested in, many students are compelled to work or study what they don't like only because of their poor economic situation. On the other hand, significant number of students feel grateful later for their parents' advice on which they objected at first. Moreover, students tend to take a positive attitude in accepting their parents' advice when they understand their parents' career, value, expectation to their children and socio-economic condition. The conclusion that students are most influenced by their parents and home environment in deciding what to do after graduation is also supported by other researches on the relationship between students' career plan and their background.
