The aim of this study was to examine the effects of The Peer Counselor Training Program by using three different groups of high school students. The participants were measured on their level of self-efficacy, attitudes towards others, and communication skills between peers. The participants consisted of twenty seven high school students, in their second year, who were from Dae-Gu provinces in South Korea. They were divided into three groups; boys, girls, and a combination of boys and girls.
The observation period took 24 weeks to complete, starting in April and finishing in September, 2001. The Peer Counselor Training Program is based on the Communication Skills and Human Relations Training model(Gray & Tindall, 1978).
The statistical analysis was performed by using an Analysis of Variance with Repeated Measure. While in groups, participants were given a pre-test, a post-test, and a follow up test was conducted three months after the post-test.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, only male group had an increase in self-efficacy. Second, it has improved that the attitudes towards others and communication skills of the participants in each of the three groups. Third, oniy in the attitudes towards others of participants, the style of each group had influenced to effect of the program.
From this results, we might conclude that At the scene of the school counseling, the mixed sex groups would be more efficacious than the same sex groups to improve the attitudes towards others.
The following are the results of self-evaluation reports written by the participants after a follow up test. This program helped them to improve their level of self-efficacy, attitudes towards others, and communication skills between peers more positive than before joining this program. And they want the mixed sex groups.
In spite of some limitations, this study tried to develop an effective way for peer counselors training.
