The purpose of this research is to analyze how well the elementary schoolchildren can adapt to their school lives in connection with the teachers' characters which have great influence on their students' school lives. And the subjects of the research to achieve this goal are shown below.
1. Analysis on the teachers' characters from the viewpoint of the students.
2. Analysis on the level of adaptation of the students to their school lives from the viewpoint of the students.
3. Analysis on the relationship between teachers' characters and the level of students' adaption to their school lives from the viewpoint of the students.
All data were collected from a sample of 740 students in their 3rd and 6th grade at 5 elementary schools in Kyungju and 9 elementary schools in farming and fishing communities. A survey form which is used here partially adopted the survey form which is originally created by Yong-heon Park(1989) to survey the characters of teachers and is revised by Ki-bok Lee(1995) for elementary schoolchildren, and also adopted the survey form, 'Survey on the adaptation to school life', which is made by Jeong-soon Im(1993) for elementary schoolchildren. Data on teachers' characters and the level of adaptation of the students to the school lives, were processed by regions, by grades and by sex. Then, the mean values and the standard deviations were calculate respectively and were compared with each other. To verify the difference, T-test is used for the statistical significance of the difference between each group's mean value. And, to verify the relationship between teachers' characters and the level of the adaptation of the students to the school lives, a correlation coefficient was calculated for any statistical significance.
Followed are the results of this research.
1. By regional groups, teachers' characters were more positively considered by students in farming and fishing communities than students in the city. By grades, teachers' characters were more positively considered by 3rd graders than 6th graders. And by sex, teachers' characters were more positively considered by boy students than girl students.
2. By regional groups, there were no significant results on the adaptation of the students to the school lives. By grades, it is more positively considered by 3rd graders than 6th graders and the result was statistically significant. By sex, there were no significant results. However, considering lessons in the schools, adaptation to their schools is more positively perceived by boy students than girl students.
3. In case of the relationship between teachers' characters and adaptation of the students to their school lives, the correlation coefficient of the students in the city is higher than that of the students in the farming and fishing communities. By grades, both of 3rd graders' and 6th graders' results represented significant and static relations. By sex, both of boy students and girl students considered that there was a close relationship between teachers' characters, lessons in the schools and their relation with their teachers. And, boy students' attitudes to the extracurricular activities is turned out to be more positive than girl students'.
