The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Parenting Stress and Socioemotional investment in the child of mothers with infant. This study also examined parenting stress and socioemotional investment in the child according to demographic variables of infants(sex, birth order) and mothers (employed states). And the relationships between parenting stress and socioemotional investment in the child and infants' temperament.
The subjects consisted of 211 mothers with infant at 6 months to 36 months. The instruments used for this study were the Parenting Stress Scale(Kim & Kang, 1997), the Parental Socioemotional Investment in the Child Scale(Bradley et als, 1997), and the Infant Characteristics Questionnaire(Lee, 1994).
The data were analyzed by frequency, percentile, mean, standard deviation, t-test and pearson's correlation.
The main results of this study were as follows :
1. The subjects' parenting stress was at a moderate level.
2. There were no statistically significant differences in parenting stress based on infanfs' sex and mothers' employed states. However, parenting stress and infants' birth order and temperament were found to be positive relationships.
3. The subjects' socioemotional investment in the child was at a little bit high level.
4. Socioemotional investment in the child and infants' birth order and temperament were found to be nagative relationships. But no statistically significant differences in socioemotional investment in the child according to infants' sex and mothers' employed states.
5. Parenting stress and socioemotional investment in the child was found to be nagative relationship.
The results of this study suggest that there is a close relationship between parenting stress and socioemotional investment in the child. The findings of this study may used as a basis for understanding parenting stress and socioemotional investment in the child of mother with infant. And also for the educational programs for parenthood.
