This research was conducted to change certain aspects of education, promote its adaptability in the highly informationalized and industrialized society of the 21st century through analysis of the problems and limits of the present social studies curriculum, enhance the effects of social studies through reference to the newspaper already acknowledged as an effective teaching material to accomplish the goals of social studies, review the problems accompanying the execution of NIE and finally to provide efficient plans for making most of NIE.
To achieve this aim, problems of the present Korean social studies curriculum were investigated through reference to relevant documents in literature and situations of NIE utilizing newspapers in education as an extracurricular teaching material were examined. And then 43 teachers in charge of social studies at the high schools in Seoul and Kyonggi province and 594 second-year boy and girl students of KyongAn high school at which this researcher works were sampled as the subject of this research. And a questionnaire was made up to collect and analyze data on the actual circumstances of social studies.
And the results of this research can be summarized as follows:
1. The execution NIE in the social studies curriculum stimulates students' motivations to learn and extends their thinking ability and the goal of social studies itself.
2. NIE makes student take an educational view of the contents of newspaper (including non-educational contents) and digest them.
3. To activate NIE, the in-service training of teachers should be expanded and teachers must drill NIE teaching skills.
4. To activate NIE, teachers need to cultivate their capability of utilizing the newspaper in teaching.
5. To activate NIE, both teachers and students should be provided relevant guide books, teaching/learning aids, the right of editing special NIE corner (especially for NIE coordinators and teachers), and well-timed information through internet.
What these results imply is as follows:
First, teachers should gradually cultivate their capability of utilizing the newspaper as a teaching material and make effort sot cope with the developments of media.
Second, teachers should pay attention to heighten the utility of electronic newspaper as well as literal newspaper.
Third, cooperative systems between community curriculum research societies and newspaper publishing companies should be established to arrange more effective and high-level teaching materials.
