This study aims to investigate the effect of synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature on young children's spatial concept. In detail, its goal is to verify the effect of synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature by investigating how synthetic mathematic activities centered on fairy tales and mathematic activities centered on themes have an effect on young children's topological concepts and Euclidean concepts through activities.
The research questions for this study were as follows;
1. What kind of effect does synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature have on topological concept?
1-1. Does synthetic mathematic activities centered in children's literature have an effect on young children's left-right concept?
1-2. Does synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature have an effect on young children's spatial converting ability?
2. What kind of effect does synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's
literature have effect on Euclidean spatial concept?
2-1. Does synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature have an effect on young children's ability to discriminate diagrams?
2-2. Does synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature have an effect on young children's ability to replicate diagrams?
The subjects of this study are 59 five-year old children(29 were assigned to the experimental group and 30 to the control group) from 2 classes located in sodaemun-gu in Seoul. Pretest, synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature, and post-test were orderly carried out.
To measure young children's topological concepts, the methods the questionnaire used by Piaget(1959) when he had measured right-left concepts, and Lavatelli(1973)'s setting table method were used in the pretest and the post-test. To measure young children's Euclidean spatial concepts, (1962)'s discrimination cards for measuring young children's ability to express diagrams were used. Piaget and Inhelder's geometrical figures which had been used for measuring ability to replicate diagrams And the general research method was interviewing. To measure young children's ability to perceive diagrams, the examination method made by Piaget was used. And the general research method was interviewing.
The experimental group carried out synthetic mathematic activities centered on children's literature 28 times and the control group carried out mathematic activities centered on themes 28 times. After the experiments, post-test was carried out with the method for measuring spatial concepts which was used in pretest and the results were analyzed with t-test.
The results of this study were as follows;
First, the experimental group operating mathematic activities centered on fairy tales showed higher score than the control group operating mathematic activities centered on themes did in the ability to perceive right-left concepts of the topological spatial concepts and concepts of converting space.
Second, the experimental group operating mathematic activities centered on children's literature showed higher score than the control group operating mathematic activities centered on themes did in the ability to express diagrams of Euclidean spatial concepts, the ability to discriminate diagrams
As a result, mathematic activities centered on children's literature can be used as a effective teaching method to teach young children spatial concepts.
