The purpose of this study was to eveluate the effect of breastfeeding education program for the expecting mothers on breastfeeding practice during the first 4 months of infant rearing.
The comparison was made between experimental group and control group on the breastfeeding practice and their knowledge on the benefits and techniques of the breastfeeding. The experimental group consisted of fifty-nine new mothers who had received breastfeeding education Previously at the College of Nursing, The control group was made up of eighty-nine mothers who have visited D-hospital's well-baby clinic.
The data were analyzed by the chi-square tests and t-tests using SAS/PC program.
The results were as follow ;
1) The number of breastfeeding mothers for the experimental group was much higher than that of control group( x^(2)=30.06, P= .000).
2) The test scores on the knowledge of breastfeeding were higher in the experimental group than that of control group (t=-14.25, P= .000).
In conclusion, the breastfeeding education program was effective in promoting the practice and knowledge of breastfeeding.
