The thesis is to consider the relationship between the self-esteem of the mothers who have child with autism and their nurture stress in conformity with the social support. To be more concrete, it is to examine whether there's any discrepancy of nurture stress level according to the self-esteem level of the mothers with autistic children and whether there's any nurture stress level difference according to social support which mothers with autistic children get. Also, investigating the connection of the self-esteem of mothers and social support to the nurture stress level is another issue. Followings are the specific subject of study.
1. What's the difference of nurture stress level according to the self-esteem level of mothers with autistic children?
2. How does nurture stress level differ from the social support which mothers with autistic children get?
3. How is mothers' self-esteem related to nurture stress level on social support?
To speculate the relationship between the autistic children's mothers' nurture stress, self-esteem, and social support, mothers who keep autistic children are used as the study methodology. Considering the point that nurture stress may differ by whether or not the children entered the school, mothers with preschoolers or elementary schoolers are included. 144 copies of survey questions out of 200 are used for the research.
And they came to these conclusions.
a. Stress which are related to cause of disability, therapy, prognosis ranked the highest among the nurture stress subscales of mothers with autistic children. Family Income level, mother's daily stress, and family-society stress have negative correlation to each other. Age, schooling, education period are positively correlated to the stress from children's disability cause, therapy, prognosis.
b. Whether or not the autistic children entered school leaves difference of their mothers' nurture stress. Mothers of autistic children who go to school show higher level of nurture stress than those of mothers whose autistic children are not going to school. And longer the education period is, higher the level of mother's nurture stress becomes.
c. Among social support subscales of autistic children's mother, the emotional support is the most popular one while the material support is the least.
d. Self-esteem of mothers with autistic children and nurture stress have negative correlation, especially stress and self-esteem of those which are related to mother's negative mentality.
e. Self-esteem of the autistic children's mother differ from the nurture stress level. Group of low self-esteem shows lower nurture stress than group of high self-esteem. Among stress of self-esteem, family-society, disabled children, dysfunctional correlation and stress from mother's negative mentality, the stress from low self-esteem group is deeper than the other. However, mother's self-esteem, their daily stress have nothing to do with mother's negative mentality.
f. There's negative correlation between social support toward autistic children's mother and their nurture stress, especially between family-society related stress and social support.
g. Social support toward autistic children's mother and their nurture stress level have a big gap. Group of low social support shows higher nurture stress than of group with high social support. This is shown among five subscales of social support toward autistic children's mother and their nurture stress.
h. There had been a negative relationship between emotional support and nurture stress among self-esteem of mothers with autistic children and social support. Equally, among stress of self-esteem, family-society, disabled children, dysfunctional interaction, emotional support and self-esteem related negatively to the nurture stress. Stress related to mother's negative mentality has to do with negative relationship between self-esteem and nurture stress level.
