The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between individual marital satisfaction and differentiation of self and to discuss the importance on the effects of differentiation of self on marital satisfaction.
This study consisted of surveys that were tape-recorded conversations of 518 married females. Each subject was asked 161 questions of social backgrounds, differentiation of self and marital satisfaction. The questions of marital satisfaction were divided in seven different parts addressing global distress, the problem of affective and ineffective communication, problem-solving communication, aggression expressed in the relationship, amount of time spent together, sexual dissatisfaction and conflict with in-laws. The results were then given points and divided in four stages. The fourth stage was the highest in differentiation of self and the first stage was the lowest. The study then focused on! identifying the differences between stages and its effects on marital satisfaction.
The results are as follow. There were no subject who fell on the first stage. All subjects who were questioned of above seven parts showed significant differences in each stage. Furthermore, subjects who fell on stage four showed highest marital satisfaction than subjects on second and third stage. However, there were no significant differences on marital satisfaction between subjects who were on second and third stage. The result of the survey concludes that marital satisfaction is greatest when subjects? differentiations of self was high.
According to Bowen?s theory, the higher the level of differentiation of self the more likely one is to find solutions in a stressful situation, and to objectively analyze, solve problems. Furthermore, deeper the level of differentiation of self, one is more likely to understand not only oneself but, also, the other people involved. This factor plays a vital role in marital satisfaction. The deeper the differentiation of self, the couple will be more successful in maintaining, developing their relationship as well as meeting each other?s needs.
In examining the family life cycle among subjects who held a career and teenage children, the study revealed that women with higher level of differentiation of self had greater marital satisfaction. Deeper and differentiation of self also had vital impact on communication, ability to solve problems, time spent together, aggression, sexual satisfaction and conflict with in-laws. Consequently, in order to deepen marital satisfaction and family stability, one must develop on the differentiation of self.
In conclusion, differentiation of self played a major role in marital satisfaction. Therefore, its is vital to develop differentiation of self through premarital programs and other program that enhance marriage life. Currently, there are numerous programs that encourage and support skills on improved marital interaction and expand knowledge through psychology. However, not much effort has been put into assisting in developing differentiation of self that will empower the individual to objectively approach the problems and search for cooperative solutions. Accordingly, Bowen?s he! aling approach was introduced: First, to develop greater awareness and to effectively analyze and evaluate the marital relationship; Second, detriangulation within the family; Third, using genogram approach; Fourth, enactment toward newly developing relationship. Through these approaches, it is hoped that one will clearly evaluate the current trend or pattern in the family and marital satisfaction, and to improve or change the necessary intergeneral conflicts, thereby make the relationship more healthier and stronger.
