Having a job provides numerous values for individuals. The values include ensuring security life, deciding the quality of life, providing the pride of the significance of existence, and so on. Further, ultimate value of having a job lies in that it provides a sense of self-actualization.
The degree of satisfaction on a person's job has significant effect on performance of his/her work. For social workers, job satisfaction may have more important meanings because their roles are critical in meeting various needs of clients they serve. Research has therefore investigated factors influencing social worker's level job satisfaction. However, studies focused on job satisfaction among social workers in residential facilities are limited in the social work literature.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of the job satisfaction and the factors related to the satisfaction among social workers in residential facilities. By doing so, the study explored practical implications for improving working conditions of the workers. A survey was employed for social workers in residential facilities for handicapped in Kyonggi Province.
Results showed that improving salary to a reasonable level has the most meaningful effect on satisfaction of their job. Other factors related to the respondents' job satisfaction were: introducing fair performance evaluation system and promotion processes, providing more benefits, and improving working conditions. Drawn from the results, it was suggested that considerable policy initiatives were necessary for improving working condition of social workers in residential facilities.
