'재키 스타일'에 관한 연구 : 1961~1963년 퍼스트레이디 시기를 중심으로 = (A) study on 'the Jackie style' : Between the year 1961 and 1963 when she was the first lady

국문 초록 (Abstract)

개인이 한 시대를 대표하는 패션 유행의 선도자로서 동시대 대중들의 지대한 관심과 모방의 대상이 되며 그의 패션 스타일이 패션사에서 하나의 패션 용어로 자리 잡으며 유행 경향에 지속적인 영향을 미치고 있는 예는 다양한 유행과 스타일이 창조되고 공존하는 현대 패션에서도 매우 드문 경우로 볼 수 있는 일이다. 이러한 의미에서 본 연구는 1960년대 초 미국과 세계의 패션 유행을 이끈 유행 선도자로서 현대 패션에도 지속적인 영향을 미치고 있는 패션 아이콘인 재클린 케네디 오나시스(Jacqueline Kennedy Gnassis: 1929~1994)의 독특한 패션 스타일인 재키 스타일에 관한 연구를 통해 그 패션 스타일이 1960년대 초반을 중심으로 어떤 형태로 전개되었으며 스타일의 특징은 무엇이고 현대 패션에 나타나고 있는 양상은 어떠한지를 살펴 현대 패션사에서의 의의가 무엇인지를 고찰해 보고자 하였다.
'재키 스타일'은 미국의 제 35대 대통령 존 F, 케네디(John F, Kennedy: 1917~1963)의 부인이었던 재클린 케네디가 1961년부터 1963년까지 퍼스트 레이디였던 시기를 중심으로 전개한 독창적인 패션 스타일로 퍼스트레이디 공식 디자이너였던 올렉 카시니(Oleg Cassini: 1913~ )와 함께 창안한 단순 하고 우아한 스타일이다. 단순하고 실용적인 형태로 우아하게 표현된 이 스타일은 시스 드레스(Sheath Dress), 부드러운 재단의 수트(Soft Suit), 직물 코트(Plain Cloth Coat), 필박스 모자(Pi11box Hat), 부풀린 헤어스타일 (Bouffant Hairdo)과 같은 특징적인 구성 요소들로 대표된다. 전형적인 착장 형태로는 수트와 이브닝드레스 착장을 드는데 수트에서는 밀리터리룩 (Militarv Look)의 영향을 받은 단순하고 활동적인 형태가 특징적인 모습으로 나타나며 이브닝드레스에서는 기하학적인 라인을 사용해 단순하게 재단 한 간결하고 우아한 형태가 특징적으로 나타난다.
재키 스타일의 특징은 단순함(Simplicity), 우아함(Elegance), 절제된 고급스러움<Moderate Luxury>으로 요약된다. 첫 번째 특징은 단순함으로 이는 고 이전의 과장되고 장식적인 여성 패션 스타일을 벗어난 단순하고 활동적인 의복 스타일로 미국 패션의 실용성과 대중성을 반영한 것이다. 두 번째 특징 은 우아함으로 이는 지극히 단순한 라인으로 하이패션의 우아함을 간결하게 표현한 모습에서 찾을 수 있다. 세 번째 특징인 절제된 고급스러움은 최고급의 원단과 제작 방법을 사용해 의복을 제작하치만 가장 단순한 라인의 재단을 통해 의복의 고급스러움을 절제된 형태로 표현한 모습에서 찾을 수 있다.
재키 스타일은 1960년대 초 등장한 새로운 세대의 이상을 표현하는 진보 적이며 혁신적인 스타일로 간주되었으며 당시의 미국 패션에 혁명적인 변화를 가져왔다. 재키 스타일의 유행에 따라 등장한 단순하고 간편한 스타일의 의복은 1960년 이전의 과장되고 장식적인 여성 패션 스타일을 이후의 젊고 혁신적인 영 패션(Young Fashion)의 유행으로 돌리는 기폭제가 된 것으로 평가된다.
또한 재키 스타일에 의해 최초로 미국에서 창조된 패션 스타일이 세계 전역으로 퍼져 나가 세계 유행의 중심이 되었으며 이로 인해 미국의 패션 산업 전반이 부흥할 수 있는 계기가 마련되었다. 이전까지 프랑스 오뜨 꾸 뛰르(Haute Couture)를 중심으로 전개되었던 세계 패션 유행의 중심으로 부 상한 재키 스다일의 미국적인 아름다움과 우아함은 동시대 미국인들에게 자국 패션 문화에 대한 자긍심을 주었고 패션 문화에 대한 미국인의 관심과 기준을 새롭게 바꾸고 이전까지의 미국 패션에 대한 세계인의 평가를 새롭게 바꾸는 계기가 되였다. 재키 스타일은 동시대 미국인들과 세계인들에게 이전 시대와는 다른 미국 패션의 우수성과 탁월한 스타일 감각을 상징하는 '미국적인 패션 아이콘(American Fashion 1corn)으로 인정받았다는 점에서 큰 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
가장 단순한 디자인으로 실용적인 기능성을 지니면서도 우아함을 열지 않는 재키 스타일은 이호 미국적인 하이 패션을 상징하는 하나의 전형이 되었고 동시대 대중의 열광적인 호응과 함께 미국적인 패션 스타일의 전통으로 자리 잡아 현대의 패션 유행에도 지속적인 영향을 미치며 그 모습이 표현되고 있다. 현대 패션에서 재키 스타일은 클래식(Classic) 스타일의 하나로 계승되며 재키 스타일을 대표하는 특징적인 디자인 요소에 현대 패션의 유행을 반영한 새로운 요소를 가미하거나 현대적인 소재와 색상으로 변형한 형태로 나타난다. 또한 재키가 사용했던 패션 제품을 그대로 재현하거나 현대적 감각에 맞도록 재해석해 만들어내는 제품 마케팅 기법으로 나타나기도 한다. 현대 패션에서 전 세계의 패션 유행에 영향을 미친 또 하나의 스타일 아이콘으로 상징되는, 영국의 다이애나 왕세자비(Lady Diana: 1961~1997)의 패션 스타일인 '다이애나 스타일(Diana Style)에서도 1960년대 초의 재키 스타일에서 많은 영향을 받은 모습을 찾아 볼 수 있다.
이와 같이 재키 스타일은 다양한 측면에서 현대와 미래의 패션에서도 변함없는 의미를 가지는 기본적인 패션 스타일이라는 점에 착안하여 그 특징적 요소인 단순함과 우아함, 절제된 고급스러움의 특징을 살린 의복을 디자인, 제작해 봄으로서 이 논문의 끝을 맺는다.
재키 스타일은 탁월한 스타일의 우수성으로 미국의 패션 스타일로서는 최초로 세계 유행의 중심이 되었으며 미국 패션 산업의 발전의 기폭제가 된 A미국적인 패션 아이콘(Amerfcan Fashion Icon)'이라는 점에서, 또 단지 한 시대의 유행을 대표하는 것이 아년 현대와 미래의 패션에서도 변함없는 영향력을 가지는 패션 스타일이라는 점에서 현대 패션사 에서 가지는 의의는 참으로 지대하다고 평가될 수 있다.
본 연구는 재키 스타일이 세계 패션 유행의 중심이었던 1961년대 초반 퍼스트 레이디 시기를 중심으로 전개하였으므로 1960년대 중반 이후의 스타일에 대한 보다 상세한 후속 연구가 이어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.

There was a very special person who became the fashion leader of the times and the center of public interest so that many people wanted to imitate her fashion style. Her distinctive fashion style has deeply effect on fashion history and became a fashion jargon of the times. It is very rare case that an individual's fashion style has a continuous influence on modern fashion world in which various of new styles and trends come and go very rapidly.
This study is about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' (1929-1994) distinctive fashion style which is called 'Jacky Style'. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is a famous American fashion icon of 1960's and has profound effect on modern fashion. Through studying on her fashion style, what were the special features of Jacky Style, how her fashion style was spreaded out in early 60's, how the style is reflected on modern fashion and why it is so significant in modern fashion history will be considered.
Jacky Style is what Jacqueline Kennedy's distinctive fashion style which she wore from 1961 to 1963 when her husband John F.Kennedy(1917-1963) was in the office. The style was very simple and elegant and was created by Jacky and Oleg Cassini(1913- ) who was the first lady's official designer. This simple, elegant and practical style was consisted of Sheath Dress, Soft Suit, Plain Cloth Coat, Pillbox Hat and Bouffant Hairdo. Jacky Style was mainly about suits and evening gowns. The Suits were influenced by Military Look so that they looked very simple and dynamic. And the evening gowns which applied to geometrical patterns looked neat and elegant.
Jacky Style can be characterized by Simplicity, Elegance, and Moderate Luxury. The first characteristic of Jacky Style which is Simplicity reflects the practicality and popularity of American fashion which is quite different from the exaggerated and decorated fashion of the past days. The second characteristic is elegance. It is shown in simple lines that represents the elegance of High Fashion. The third characteristic, Moderate Luxury can be found in high quality materials and simple cuts. Through those techniques, distinctive features of the high-class fashion are well expressed in moderate ways.
The change of American fashion brought by Jacky Style which reflected the ideal of the new generations of 1960's and was considered to be very progressive and innovatory was very revolutionary. Jacky has been appreciated as a forerunner of the Young Fashion which became very popular after 1960's. The fresh and innovatory style of the Young Fashion which was deeply influenced by Jacky Style was very different from the exaggerated and decorated fashion of the past days.
Moreover, Jacky Style was the first American fashion style spreaded all over the world. Upon the popularity of the Jacky Style, America suddenly became the center of the fashion world and American fashion industry started to prosper rapidly. Before that time, Haute Couture of France had led the world fashion, however, since Jacky Style came into fashion, American beauty and elegance was introduced to other countries so that the self-conceit about American fashion was inspired into Americans of the era. Meantime, people in other countries started to be interested in American fashion. Upon Jacky Style, not only Americans but also people all over the world recognized the superiority and the excellency of the American fashion and the style became the 'American Fashion Icon'. That's why Jacky Style is so significant in American fashion history.
Jacky Style which is very simple in design, practical in function and elegant is turned into the typical style of American High Fashion. It also stirred up enthusiasm in the public of the same era so that it became the new tradition of American fashion style which keeps on influencing modern fashion trends. In modern fashion, Jacky Style is succeeded as one of the classic styles. The distinctive design factors of the Jacky Style can be applied to modern fashion by using new colors, materials and etc. The fashion accessories that Jacky wore are also a good fashion marketing item so the accessories are made into actual manufactured goods. There is another fashion style icon that influenced the modern fashion trends of the world is Lady Diana(1961-1997) and her fashion style is called Diana Style. Diana Style is also under influence of Jacky Style.
Since Jacky Style is a significant basic fashion style that exerts an important effect upon modern and even future fashion style, I would like to finish this thesis by making clothes that show the distinctive factors of the Jacky Style-Simplicity, Elegance, and Moderate Luxury.
Jacky Style has a significant meaning in modern fashion history. Because of Jacky Style, the superiority and the excellency of American fashion style was recognized world wide and America became the center of the world's fashion. The true American Fashion Icon, Jacky Style also brought the development of American fashion industry. The style would keep on exercising an important effect of modern and future fashion.
Since this study is based on the early 1960's when Jacky Style led the world fashion, it is considered that following study about the fashion styles after the mid 60's is required.
