The purpose of this study is to develop the portfolio program for pre-service science teachers on common science teaching materials.
The portfolio program aims to enhance the active learning and the reflective thinking, and at the same time to promote the ability for performance assessment in the field.
this portfolio program had been developed and lasted for 1st semester. 1999 with junior students in the department of science education in cooperative learning. This portfolio program consisted in the portfolio for comparing and analyzing the contents of 5 kinds of common science textbooks chosen arbitrary, and the portfolio for developing instructional strategy.
The portfolio was consisted of program goal statements, evidences and reflections, evidence checking list and self-assessment. In portfolio for comparing and analyzing the contents of common science textbook, 6 objectives are suggested: unit objectives set-up, concept-mapping, comparing and analyzing the content, survey the related misconceptions and hierarchy the contents, and affective objective. In portfolio for developing instructional strategy, 4 objectives are suggested: unit objectives set-up for one unit, understanding the learning models for science teaching, developing the instructional strategy for that unit, and affective objective. The portfolios are assessed with analytic scoring check lists by 2 raters and the inter rater reliability was .72~.97.
pre-service science teacher considered that setting up the goal is more important than collecting data or making them into evidences. More then 65 percent of them also asked that it is worth to make portfolio. They suggested that evidence, learner-oriented education, and group activity as a merit but also suggested that heavy load for making portfolio as a defect.
More than 60 percent of pre-service science teacher answered that portfolio assessment is procedure-centered, and around 75 percent of them also asked that portfolio assessment is helpful to checking the procedure.
About 90 percent of them preferred to concrete scoring standard in portfolio assessment because it is helpful for orientation.
Half of them responded positive answer in the aspect of usefulness of portfolio in collecting the knowledge and using in pre-service teather education, and rest of them respond negatively to the same question. 70 percent of them, however, replied positively in the usefulness of portfolio in procedure centered class and development of teaching materials. 57 percent of them said that they would choose portfolio as a performance assessment in school education. Many of who respond negatively to portfolio assessment suggested that it is difficult to apply school education and it takes too much time. In this respect, we consider to reduce the load in portfolio.
Though portfolio program for pre-service teacher education has many advantages to promote ability for performance assessment, to develop procedure-centered learning, it takes too much time and burdens them with load. Therefore, it is necessary to limit the amount of portfolio and to discuss completely and to guide in carrying out portfolio for general agreement in learning goal.
