The goal of the present study is to explore the effects of English reading anxiety on the process of English reading as a foreign language. FL reading is more complex and risk-taking than L1 Reading. Readers first encounter the symbols, decode them into sounds, and associate the sounds with words, and then attempt to process the meaning of a text. Two aspects of FL reading seem to have great potential for eliciting anxiety; unfamiliar scripts and writing systems, and unfamiliar cultural concepts. The present study attempts to solve three research questions: First, how is the English reading anxiety of Korean high school students?; Second, What are the effects of English reading anxiety on English reading proficiency and strategy use and awareness?; Third, do the reading anxiety and reading strategy influence the reading proficiency as independent variables? If not, how does the interaction of these two variables predict students' reading proficiency?
The subjects of this study were 129 high school students. All of them are the girls who were around 17 years old, and who had studied English for 5 years at the time of this study. The subjects performed reading comprehension test and cloze test. They also completed two kinds of questionnaires; English reading anxiety (modified FLRAS), and strategy use and awareness. Their test score and response data were processed by SAS. ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were performed.
As a result, this study found that the level of English reading anxiety of Korean students is comparatively high. that high-anxious students' reading proficiency was lower and their strategy use is less effective than the low-anxious., and that the interaction of reading anxiety and strategy use and awareness influences the students' reading proficiency. When reading anxiety increases and strategy use and awareness decrease, student's reading proficiency is lower, and vice versa. We can reach the conclusions that reading anxiety has negative effects on reading process, strategy use and reading proficiency. Among anxiety factors; sub-categories related to self-confidence, strategy use, background knowledge, vocabulary, and grammar, the self-confidence factor is the only important predictor of both reading proficiency and strategy use and awareness. This study also suggested some implications in teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
