The present of study is initiated from the critical mind that our society has an unreasonable viewpoint of juveniles in the orphanages. Even though they are in a structurally specific case compared with those grown up at normal homes, they should not be subject to unfair biases due to the structural characteristic.
This paper based on the critical mind mentioned above reviews their present emotional stability, and it pursues the hypothesis that they are not inferior to normal youth through their positive self-evaluation and plans for their futures founded on this emotional stability. We will try to overcome through cases in this paper.
The structural characteristic above mentioned is how flexibly the family structure is replaced. In fact, the roles of siblings are getting replaced but the roles of parents especially fathers', are relatively short. However, imperfection of the replacement doesn't necessarily mean that their emotional support is different from normal ones.
Consequently, the ultimate objective of this paper is to make clear that underestimation of their emotional stability is unreasonable.
Some aspects were reviewed in the present paper to figure out the emotional stability of orphans; one that looked over the structural characteristics of orphanages, the other that was reviewed was the orphans own self-conceptions of the juveniles in orphanages. In addition, the replacement types of the emotional support which normal juveniles were supported by; their own structural characteristics were found out. Finally, it was figured out how much the juveniles of orphanages. were satisfied with their lives.
It could be said that their emotional stability was not inferior to normal juveniles through researching how often much their future plans were positive. Also, that their specific experience didn't lead them to negative perceptions was discovered in the middle of researching their image of their future family.
As a matter of fact, however, there are a lot of problems in the aspect of the structural characteristics. For example, each fosterer is responsible for about 10 children. It means that there must be differences between normal juveniles and them in the point of 'support.' But in the fact that the subjects of support are usually their friends, it could not be said that the emotional support due to the structural characteristics is short compared with normal juveniles. And inside orphanages, they had many subjects who were friends, fosterers, etc. Those subjects were good examples of the replacement of family structures.
In this situation that the emotional support was ensured, they were asked how they felt about self-conceptions. All of them answered that they had affirmative thinking about themselves can be determined according to their satisfaction.
They were also asked what they thought of their lives in orphanages, and whether they talked to other friends and surrounding people(excluding the people of orphanages) about the fact that they lived in orphanages. On this question, they answered that they didn't want to resent of deny it although their lives were started under unavoidable circumstances.
And when their openness to their lives in the orphanage was reviewed, they all thought that there was no reason not to be honorable because it was not necessary for them to dissemble it.
Finally, those young people who were emotionally stable enough were asked about their future plans and image of their future family. This question was to point out the problems which should be improved by government policy for the children under structurally specific circumstances. Their futures plans were as affirmative as normal juveniles. But, they actually become laborers because they faced many problems, especially financial problems, after being released from, the facility. It is one of the structural weaknesses.
That the number of children each orphanage has to be responsible for is relatively large means lack of converging care. It becomes a major cause in that the juveniles in orphanages are badly evaluated compared with normal ones. And they have so few opportunities to study role of a married couple that they have difficulty in understanding the concepts of such
Due to those fact, the present writer suggested Group-home to improve the structural weaknesses of the orphanages. Group-home is a type of foster care which is managed independently by small family that consists of 4 or 5 adults and children. And they can be said that they are a sort of legal Guardian for juveniles in the orphanages.
This idea could be the most proper proposal under the real conditions based of family ties in Korean society.
