The purpose of this research is to find out level of sociodramatic play and difference in communication according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic. To elaborate, it aims to provide the teachers at work with helpful tips in using sociodramatic play and communication by examining what differences there are in the level of sociodramatic play, language behavior, type of communication, and coherence discouese according to the area such as urban vs, rural areas, the sex composition of the group, such as same sex group, i.e., a girls-only group, a boys-only group, or a mixed group, and the topic such as family vs. hospital.
For the above purpose, the researcher draw up. The research questions as follows:
Ⅰ. How does the level of sociodramatic play change accoreing to the area, the sex composition, and the topic?
Ⅰ-1. Are there differences in the overall level of sociodramatic play and the inferior factors according to the area?
Ⅰ-2. Are there differences in the overall level of sociodramatic play and the inferior factors according to the sex composition of the group?
Ⅰ-2. Are there differences in the overall level of sociodramatic play and the inferior factors according to the topic?
Ⅱ. How is communication in sociodramatic play according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic?
Ⅱ-1. Are there differences in all language behavior according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic?
Ⅱ-2. Are there differences in pretence enactment and pretence planning language according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic?
Ⅱ-3. Are there differences in the category and the type of communication according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic?
Ⅱ-4. Are there differences in coherence discourse according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic?
The subjects of this research were selected from two areas: mid-size city and rural areas. The Kindergarten B locaued in City I in Chonbuk province was chosen for the urban area; the day-care center K and H located in S Myon and H Myon in Chonbuk were chosen for the rural area. The subjects were children of ages four and five. There were four children in each group. There were six boys-only groups, six girls-only groups, and six mixed-groups in the urban and rural areas respectively. AS a result, there were 72 subjects in each area, which makes a total of 144 subjects for this research.
For this research, we used the measuring tools for sociodramatic play developed by Similansky and Shaefer (1990). The researcher used the standard for pretence planning and pretence enactment language by Black(1989), Miller-Gray(1997), for communication by Leaper (1991). Lin(1997)s categories were used for coherence episode. Collected data were analyzed to produce a one-way ANOVA in order to verify the research topics Ⅰ and Ⅱ. Scheffe verification was conducted for a post verification.
The results of this research are as follows:
First, there was no difference in the overall level of sociodramatic play according to the area. However, in inferior factor of interaction, the urban group showed a higher level than the rural group. In the overall level of sociodramatic play according to the sex composition of the group, the girls-only group showed a higher level. Among the inferior factors, the girls-only group showed a higher level in the following factors: interaction, imitative role-play, persistence in role-play, make-believe with actions and situations. Regarding the theme, in the overall and inferior factors of sociodramatic play difference was documented with hospital theme showed a higher level than family. Among the inferior factors, the hospital theme showed a higher level in the factors of interaction, imitative role-play, persistence of role-play, make-believe with actions and situations.
Second, regarding communication according to the area, the sex composition of the group, and the topic, the results in all language behavior, pretence enactment and pretence planning, category and type of communication, and coherence discourse are as follows. There was difference in all language behavior according to the area, the topic. That is, the children in urban group used more language behavior than those in the rural group and the children in the hospital topic used more language behavior than in family theme. There was no difference in language behavior according to the sex composition of the group.
There were difference in the pretence planning language according to the area and the topic. That is, the children in the urban group used more than those in the rural group and the children used more in hospital topic than in family topic. In pretence enactment language, there were difference according to the sex composition of the group and topic. That is, there was found more often in the girls-only group and the children used more often in hospital topic.
In the category of communication, the urban group used more collaboration category, whereas the rural group used more withdrawal category and the children in the hospital topic used more control, collaboration, obligation, withdrawal category than in family topic. In the type of communication, the urban group used self-reference, criticism of others, suggestion, description of action, question, turnabout acceptance, and turnabout rejection more often, whereas the rural group used physical attack, no response more often, whereas the rural group used physical attack, no response more often, whereas the rural group used physical attack, no response more often. Regarding the sex compositon of the group, the boy-only group used more self-reference, physical attack type. In the type of communication according to the topic, the children in the hospital theme used more physical attack, simple rejection, description of action, question, simple acceptance type than in family theme.
Regarding the area, the urban group had more coherence episode than the rural group. As for the sex composition of the group, the girls-only group had more. whereas irrelevant discourse was found more often in the boys-only group. In coherence according to the topic, the children in the hospital topic used. more had more short episode than in family topic.
