The purpose of this study was to serve a basis for an antismoking campaign and to prevent adolescents from smoking by analyzing the smoking realities and factors to have influence. The subjects in this study were third graders in 11 middle schools located in Kangwon Province. The data were collected from March 3 through November 30, 2000. The findings of this study were as follows:
1. Among the 1871 subjects(including 872 boys and 999 girls), 20.07%(175) of the boys and 17.02%(170) of the girls were habitual smokers, 33.83%(295) of the boys and 18.12%(181) of the girls have experienced in smoking, and 45.74% of the boys and 64.68% of the girls have never smoked.
2. Habitual smokers replied that they had started smoking in the fifth grade in elementary school(37.79%) followed by the second grade in middle school(16.57%). Students who have experienced in smoking replied that boys had started smoking in the fifth grade in elementary school(18%) and girls had started smoking in the second grade in middle school(34.6%) the most. Habitual smokers replied that they had bought cigarettes in the store(56.01%) the most and students who have experienced in smoking replied that they had obtained from their friends(38.97%) followed by they had obtained one or two possessed by their elder family members(34.9%).
3. Habitual smokers replied that they had mostly smoked at amusement facilities and students who have experienced in smoking replied that they had smoked at empty lot(covert place which was unfrequented) the most. They replied that they had smoked habitually. Habitual smokers replied that they had no intention to quit smoking. This means that adolescents' smoking is very serious.
4. In family factors, there's a significant difference among habitual smokers, students who have experienced in smoking and students who have never smoked in lone father, order of brothers and sisters, educational background and parents' occupation, the way of bringing up children of parents, smoking of family members, smoking place of family members, drinking frequency of parents, financial strength of family, and pocket money.
5. In their living environmental factors, smoking behavior was affected by studying environment, surroundings, the way of attending school, eating habits, the number of the fiends to associate with, leisure pursuits after school, watching television, regular exercises, and interest level of school life.
6. In private environmental factors, smoking behavior was affected by school records, boy friends or girl friends, drinking, disappearance from home, sexual relations, self-injury, personality, and destruction impulse. This means that smoking was affected by deviative behavior from adolescents like them.
7. In influential smoking attitude, the higher their tendency to smoke, they took affirmative attitude on smoking scene in a movie or TV and adults', men's, women's and adolescents' smoking, however they took very denial attitude on teachers' smoking. The higher their tendency to smoke, they did not understand harmfulness of smoking and most of them have not been involved in antismoking campaign. And they replied they would keep smoking, especially, habitual smokers would surely keep smoking. This means that middle school students' smoking is very serious.
