This study has been carried out by making observations and analyses on example cases of single-parent children who participated in after-school programs. The reason for selecting child cases from one-parent families rather than those children from families of two parents working together for a living which could be the main target of after school programs was because social services like after-school programs for children of single-parent families are acutely needed. The purpose of this investigation was set for revealing (1) the influence of after-school programs at Bird's Nest Children's Institute on the juveniles of singe-parent families and (2) the contributions of these after-school programs to diversification and specialization. The method of study utilized the qualitative case study approaches such as participation and observation, interviews and data analyses.
The summaries of results coming from the issues of this research are as follows.
First, the surroundings including the town, homes and school environment, around which the children participate in after-school programs at Bird's Nest Children's Institute, are inadequate at best. Guro Industrial Complex region has relatively fallen behind other regions in welfare and cultural services while economic hardships among low-income families have made the situation worse. Consequently, these children are not getting the necessary, proper and pleasant social environment in the region and in the home as well as school atmosphere that are essential for children's development.
Second, Bird's Nest Children's Institute carries out creative educational programs. It develops originality among juveniles, gropes for physical and intellectual progresses through making good use of activities of experiences, and stimulates social development of these children by education that augments the idea of a shared common community. The Institute additionally provides help needed in daily life such as safety, protection and health management of these juveniles.
Also, a distinctive feature in operation at Bird's Nest Children's Institute is that 40% of those children participating in the after-school programs come from single parent families, and that the institute carries out a special program for these children.
Third, in the Evening Life Shared Community Program of Single-Parent Families for single-parent children, the teachers become a solution to the tasks of daily lives by substituting for parents in their parental role, which should be normally performed at home but the situation does not permit such a parental role play.
Learning the methods of utilizing learning tools not only satisfies the intellectual needs of these ever-developing children, but also helps relieving the relative feeling of destitution.
The diverse extracurricular activities widen the scope of the world, through which these children perceive them as their experiences. Furthermore, bilateral interactions through multitudes of stimulations arising from the relationship among the pier group and teachers nurture their abilities for coping with inadvertent circumstances, and provides opportunities for human relations training to help these juveniles in their emotional and social development. By providing professional services to these children to cure and overcome emotional, psychological wounds and problem behaviors arising from them, it helps them to grow up as independent individuals of integrity and contributes to juvenile development of completeness. Additionally, it helps augment the family functions through parent counseling and education.
