English teaching through stories is very effective for teaching elementary English because stories provide meaningful situations and show good models of conversations in real context.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect on students' interest and the development of language skills after teachers' using Korean or English in storytelling and to seek a more effective teaching method for Elementary School English class.
For carrying out this study some related teaching-learning theories and theories about storytelling were investigated. Storytelling-based teaching models were searched and a model for this study based on theory was presented.
A survey of Elementary School teachers was conducted to set up the way how to teach effectively with storytelling. This study was carried out with 2 classes - 86 students who were in the 3rd grade in elementary school. They were taught using the same lesson plan. But it was different to tell stories between two classes. Through the lesson plans, which have been made up 4 periods in a unit, they listened to the same story once every period. For the experimental group, the stories were told just in English every time. For the comparison group, in the first period the teachers told the stories in English just about key sentences and others in Korean. In the next periods they told in more English step by step. Finally they told just in English in the last period.
The results were investigated by self - evaluation, listening test, and speaking test in retelling activities. The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the students felt more interested when the teachers use just English rather than using Korean and English in storytelling. But it's possible when the story contains comprehensible language contents for the students. So for more effective teaching in storytelling, teachers have to recompose the lesson contents and related stories. Second. the result of the listening test in the group using just English showed a more positive effect than the other group, but the balance of t-test was not meaningful. Maybe the same progress might correspond to 90% with the exception of storytelling. Third, the result of the speaking test by two teachers' observation through retelling activity was to be different between two groups. The students group who just listened to stories just in English tried to retell the story just in English as much as they could. It was compared with the other group that used to use much Korean. So it was made clear that storytelling just in English was more effective for development of students' language skills. Fourth, the children were immersed in the stories when they sat at the center of the classroom together and listened to stories with music.
A conclusion may be drawn that storytelling just in English is positive for students' interests and development of language skills. But for this the teachers need to collect suitable stories, recompose the stories according to students' levels and prepare the materials to tell the stories for helping understanding. From the survey of elementary school teachers, they answered it is too hard to prepare the materials, especially among these that have to teach all subjects, not only English.
In conclusion, it need that the effective storytelling-based method with materials which teachers can use easily is supplied in the curriculum. And teachers should try to do their best for variety's sake in teaching elementary English, not just stick to one method.
