To solve the problems concerning poverty families has been one of the major concerns of social welfare. In spite of a lot of efforts, it is still a great issue. In particular, marital conflicts are an important task to be settled.
The purpose of this study is to suggest a series of strategies to help solve the marital conflicts among poverty families, based on the comparing analysis of normal families in terms of family conflicts, depression, spouse abuse, and family hardiness. The subject for this study, based on both literary and empirical research, were 1025(359 poverty and 666 normal) families. The following sums up the significant findings of this research:
1. In fact of a certain problem with different views, poverty couples experience more conflicts in respecting or listening to each other´s opinion than normal ones.
2. In face of a conflict, poor couples lack the capacity to negotiate of cooperate to reach an agreement.
3. Poverty families have about seven points lower than common ones in family hardiness, which means the former are relatively weakly structured.
4. Poverty families have weaker belief that their cooperative efforts will overcome their difficulties and bring about better future. Therefore, they tend to accept everything as destiny and lack the interest to join in community activities.
5. As for the degrees of emotional abuse, poverty families are twice as high as average ones. Much physical abuse is also found in them, especially females. In consideration of the Korean cultural context of rarely revealing private or family affairs in public, spouse abuse may be more severe and more often than it seess.
6. As to depression, poverty families show more symptoms than normal ones.
Grounded on these findings, the following strategies can be suggested to settle the marital conflicts among poverty families:
First, among the strategies to strengthen family hardiness are financial support, empowerment, and family intervention. The third includes social network family therapy, communication-oriented family therapy, and ecosystem-centered family therapy.
Second, among the strategies to root out spouse abuse are prevention and cure-rehabilitation. As preventive measures, slight violence requires the improvement of spous communication, while chronical and habitual abuse requires the protection of the assaulted and a rigid legal control of each assailant (by the judicial police officer) according to the concerned law of domestic violence prevention.
As the measures of cure and rehabilitation, social and cure services are emphasized. Among the necessary social services are ①establishing victim protection facilities and counselling centers, ② offering immediate emergency room services, ③ setting up an emergency call system, ④ providing legal services, ⑤ securing economic support, ⑥ preparing reach & support services of local socal welfare facilities, and ⑦ making inter-system of interdisciplinary cooperation for a team approach.
Also, as cure and rehabilitation services, there are individual, group, and family (including couple) counselling activities for the purpose of overcoming the mental problems of the victims and correcting the behavioral problems of the injurers. In particular, this study is focused on the couple-oriented timeout method as well as the training of body relaxation, self-assertion, and problem-solving skills. In addition, a group program for diverse training is effective, while the activities of the self-support groups of both the assaulted and the assailants are encouraged.
Third, among the key strategies to get rid of depression are financial support (for living, educational, and medical expenses) and job education programs. When the women in poverty families are led to find their jobs, their self-respect is enhanced and emotional desire is fulfilled to soon kick away their depression. Those social welfare facilities in the districts of the poor should have programs for them to use 24 hours a day. The classes for effective parenthood training and reasonable thinking training are suggested here.
In sum, compared with normal families, poverty families are rather weakly composed and have less capacity to efficiently deal with any conflicts. Because poverty has a great influence on family conflicts, financial support and social work are a must to help solve those conflicts. As this study is about the strategies to solve marital conflicts centered on poor families, further research is demanded in the issue of conflicts among all members of the poverty families.
