The purpose of this study was to contribute to the understanding of perceptions and attitudes of professionals, caregivers, and elders toward elder abuse and the support services that will most benefit caregivers and elderly persons. Specifically, the study attempted to compare the differences in perceptions and attitudes among professionals, caregivers, and elders regarding elder abuse and to classify the concept of elder abuse. The study population consisted of 329 professionals, 322 caregivers who must take care of their parents or others at home, and 400 elderly over 65 years old in Pusan and Taegu. The data were collected randomly by interviews with questionnaire, and analyzed by frequencies, percentages, means, crosstables, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple regression, and Cronbach´s α. Measures included adaptations of Stones´s Elder Abuse Survey Tool and Elder Abuse Attitude Test.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
    1. All respondents showed high perceptions and attitudes toward elder mistreatment. However, caregivers´ perceptions were lower than elders´ perceptions on caregivers´ responsibility.
    2. The five types of elder abuse were defined as violations of rights, passive neglect, physical abuse, active neglect, and material abuse. There were statistically significant differences between the three groups in physical abuse and violations of rights (p< .001). The highest mean scores were shown in the perceptions of physical abuse among the five types of elder abuse. The elders showed the highest mean scores among the three groups in violations of rights. In contrast, the caregivers scored the lowest mean of all the three groups in violations of rights.
    3. In order to find out important factors that might predict elder abuse in this sample, three sets of regression analyses were conducted in order to eliminate variables that did not contribute significantly to predicting the likelihood of a caregiver being abusive toward their elder. The dependent variables were violations of rights, passive neglect, physical abuse, active neglect, and material abuse. The independent variables were the demographic variables that included age, health condition, religion, living arrangement, sex, education level, and marital status of caregivers and elders. The ten family conflict categories (how money is spent, who should do household chores, relationships with children, relationships with other relatives, television, food, one of you drinking too much, one of you using drugs, job, relationships with friends) were the independent variables in the second group of analyses. The third set of variables were the seven dependency categories (financial support, cooking or cleaning, household repairs, companionship and social activities, personal care, transportation, housing). The more conflict and dependency the caregiver and older person exhibit, the lower elder abuse scores they have. Variables associated with family conflict and elder dependency were predicted to affect perceptions of elder abuse. It was also hypothesized that subjects in the dependent elderly would obtain lower scores on the perceptions and attitudes toward elder abuse. Elder abuse can be found by examining the relationships with dependency, which exhibited considerably stronger relationships to elder abuse than did the demographic variables.
Based on the result, it was possible to suggest that social worker be an educator, mediator, therapist, and advocator in order to prevent elder abuse caused by the burden of elder care.
