The purpose of this study was to serve as a basis for a broader understanding of children's oral health management. For this purpose I examined the children's general oral health care condition, goal of maintaining dental hygiene, preventive attitude, and knowledge of dental health.
The subjects in this study were 583 children. (e.g, 292 fourth to six graders in D elementary school in Youngdeungpo-ku, Seoul, and 291 fourth to six graders in Y elementary school in Yeoju-kun, Kyonggi province) A questionnaire survey was conducted from September 13 to 17, 1999. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS Ver 8.0.
The findings of this study were as follows:
First, the boy students had better toothbrushing habit than the girl students. The higher graders carried out toothbrushing more frequently, and this difference between the higher and lower graders was statistically significant.
Second, 28.5% used a proper toothbrush that contained middle-sized head and straight handle. The children who had a mother with higher educational background, or acquired dental health information in school, used a proper toothbrush.
Third, it generally took 2 or 3 minutes for them to brush their teeth.
Fourth, the higher graders employed a rolling method, the right toothbrushing method, and this difference between the higher and lower graders was statistically significant.
Fifth, most children used a toothbrush for 3 to 6 months. The higher graders changed toothbrush more frequently, and this difference between the higher and lower graders was statistically significant.
Sixth, the preventive behavior of oral disease was taken more by the girl students than the boy students, by the children who had better knowledge of dental health, by those who had a mother with higher educational background, or by the students who acquired dental health information in dental clinics. The difference between them was statistically significant.
Seventh, regarding the implementation of oral health knowledge, better dental health awareness was possessed by the girl students than the boy students, by the higher graders, or by those who acquired dental health information in school. Those students also put their dental health knowledge in practice more, and the difference between them was statistically significant.
Eighth, dental clinic was used more frequent by the girl students than the boy students, by the higher graders, or by those who acquired dental health information in dental clinic, and the difference between them was statistically significant.
The above-mentioned findings suggested that dental health education need to be more effectively offered in elementary school. Besides, indirect efforts for dental health education should be made, like developing dental health education program for mothers who played a big role in child dental health management, or preparing books for the publicity of dental health management.
