The purpose of this research is to clarify the structure of clothing consumption values related to the clothing consumer behavior, to prove the consumption value to be useful parameters defining consumer behavior by analyzing the relation between clothing value and consumer characteristic variables, such as clothing involvement and fashion leadership, and finally to provider for basic data useful for several fields of marketing.
The research topics are as follows:
First, to clarify the structure of the clothing consumption value by constructing survey questions about the consumption values related to clothing consumer behavior and analyzing factor structure.
Second, to find out the importance on clothing consumption value.
Third, to clarify the relationship between the consumer group and the clothing consumption value in terms of clothing involvement.
Forth, to clarify the relationship between the consumer group and the clothing consumption value in term of fashion leadership.
Fifth, to clarify the relationship between the consumer group and the clothing consumption value in terms of social classes and demographic characteristics.
The theoretical study and survey were used as research method, and the questionnaire was used for material collection. First, focus group interview was carried out to construct questions on clothing consumption value and to clarify the related structure. Next, the data were obtained from 1272 university students, and factor analysis was followed. The data for clarifying the relation between clothing consumption value and consumer characteristic variables were obtained from 714 university students. Factor analysis, discriminant analysis, variance analysis, canonical correlation analysis, and Scheffe test were used for data analysis.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, six factors for men and seven factors for women were extracted from the lower structure of clothing consumption values and analyzed differently according to the sex. Clothing consumption values of men are composed of conditional social value, appearance attractiveness value, psychological value, functional value, epistemic value, and fashion value. Those of women are composed of fashion value, psychological value, appearance attractiveness value, functional value, conditional value, personality expression value, and social value.
Second, with analyzing clothing consumption values considered significant by consumers, all clothing consumption values are considered significant generally, and the most significant value among university students is the appearance attractiveness value in relation to the expression of attractiveness, harmony of appearance, expression of ideal appearance, expression of charming appearance, and so on.
Third, as a result if clothing consumption value can be divided by groups according to clothing involvement level, significant differences were found in clothing consumption values except functional value of man, which could make difference of groups. The appearance attractiveness value is most significant value to divede two groups. As man students considered fashion value, appearance attractiveness value, conditional social value, epistemic value, and psychological value more significant, they were invovled more in clothing fashion, interest, pleasure, symbol, brand recognition, production knowledge and so on. As woman students considered fashion value, social value, appearance attractiveness value, personality expression value, conditional social value, and psychological value more significant, they were involved more in clothing fashion, interest, pleasure, brand recognition, symbol, production knowledge and so on.
Forth, with analyzing if clothing consumption values can be divided by groups according to fashion leadership, significant differences were found in six clothing consumption values for men as predicting variables to divide between the fashion leader group and the nonfashion group. Among them, the conditional social value was the most significant value, but functional value was found to be negative value. In case of women, significant differences were found in all seven clothing consumption values as predicting variables to divide groups. The fashion value was the most significant value, but functional value was found to be negative value.
Fifth. With analyzing the relationship between clothing consumption values and social levels, for men, clothing consumption values except the functional values were considered significant in the higher level group, and the functional value was considered significant in the lower level group. For women, significant difference was found in the consumption values except the functional value. The higher level group considered clothing consumption value most significant, but the lower group did not consider it significant.
Sixth, with analyzing the difference of clothing consumption value according to demographic characteristics, significant differences did not occur in relation to major in case of men, but it occurred in school year, growth place, living place and clothing purchasing price in case of both men and women. In case of men, one who had high school year, grew in big cities such as Seoul, lived in Kang-Nam area, and had high average clothing purchasing price per a season considered clothing consumption value significant. In case of women, one who had major in cultural and social science or art or clothing, had low school year, grew in big cities such as Seoul, lived in Kang-Nam area, and had high average clothing purchasing price per a season considered clothing consumption value significant.
