Nim Janggun Jun (The Tale of General Nim), a product of the will of the people trying to overcome the historical shock caused by the defeat in Beling Ja Ho Ran(丙子胡亂), is one of the so-called biographical, historical novel.
The tale deals with the whole life of General Nim Kyung Up, a famous Korean military leader(1594∼1646) and historical events during the King Injo(仁祖) period of Lee Dynasty(朝鮮王朝).
The novel based on people's experience of the defeat of the war, is not a record of historical facts but an expression of the historical reality reflected in people's consciousness.
In the novel. General Nim is the people's hero who showed the heroic struggle in fighting King Ho(胡王), the outer enemy, and Kim Jajum(金自點), the in-country enemy. He defeated the aggression of the Ho enemy(胡敵) three times and overpowered them, which made it possible for the captive princes to return home.
Though General Nim died a tragic death through the vicious scheme of Kim Jajum, the incompetent ruler and trator, he reappeared in the King’s dream and protected the royal rights by telling the King the treachery of Kim Jajum.
The activities of General Nim developing along the fictional plot in the historically given situation, consoled the defeated and humiliated spirit of the people and also represented the victory of the people's consciousness in criticizing the incompetent ruling classes at that time.
In this regard, The Tale of General Nim, unlike similar kinds of other war hero novel's(軍談小說), reflected the people's historical consciousness of the times and social currents and inspired the national consciousness.
Such characteristic of the novel must have satisfied the desire of common people which seems to have made its Bang Kag Bon(坊刻本) and the story of the novel widely spread by story tellers(傳奇?).
Nim Janggun Jun, though recognized as one of the typical historical works, has not been the object of special interest until now. We find some noteworthy studies about it but they are not perfect in that they show partial investigation and the lack of the original materials.
The attempt to describe the original in terms of literary history is also lacking in correctness and unity. This thesis aims at the general study on Nim Janggun Jun putting emphasis upon supplementing the weak-points and errors and correcting the studies already done.
For the effective study, this thesis is divided into three parts: (1) the background research of the novel, (2) the study of various original materials, and (3) the artistic research of the novel. Part (1) and (2) are preparatory works, and part (3) is intended to find out the nature and literary historical value of the novel through analysing its contents and structure.
Especially I have made efforts to present a variety of materials such as the various original versions, biographies, folktales, etc., concerned with General Nim, which will make my study more authentic.
