염상섭 소설의 이중플롯 연구 : 초기 장편 소설을 중심으로 = (A) Study on The Double-Plot of Yeom Sang Sub's Novels : with a focus on Yeom Sang Sub's early novels

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 1920년대 초에서 30년대 초까지의 염상섭 '장편소설'을 이중플롯으로 분석하여 그 서사적 전략과 재현 양상을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이에 텍스트에 대한 구조화 과정으로서의 이중플롯에 대한 이해와 서사 재현 양상과 관련해 서사주체의 담화적 특징에 대한 이해가 전제되어야 한다.
이중플롯은 '이중double'이라는 단어가 가지고 있는 모호성 때문에 서사 층위와 텍스트 의미 해석 등 여러 이론적 시각에서 논의되었다. 이중플롯에 대한 접근은 복합적이고 다중적인 세계 인식 안에서 서사적 재현에 대한 다층적 의미구조를 타당하게 하는 시각으로 이루어져야 한다. 아리스토텔레스 이후, 플롯은 '행위의 모방 혹은 사건의 인과적 결합 원리'로 말해져 왔다. 그러나 플롯 개념은 서시의 중심 사전 간의 기능적 결합 관계나 그 행위 구조에 관한 구조적 기술로 플롯을 이해하려는 관점으로부터 서사의 주제적 의미와 정서적 효과를 환기시키는 서사 구성 요소의 전체적이고 역동적인 조직화 원리로 플롯을 규정하려는 방향으로 이론적 변화를 보여왔다고 말할 수 있다. 이에 플롯은 대상을 지각하고 해석하고 욕망하는 서사 주체가 서사적 구성요소와의 상호 관련성 안에서 형성하는 가능 세계, 즉 서사적 공간의 내재적 원리이다. 서사 주체의 인식의 한계와 과도한 의도성은 서사적 리얼리티를 깨뜨리게 되고, 서사적 진행을 뒤틀어 놓는다. 따라서 독자는 자신에게 제시되는 서사적 사실에 동화되기보다는 객체화되고 모호한 관계로 서사적 사실을 인식하게 된다. 즉, 이중플롯은 서사주체의 인식의 한계로 인한 객관화되고 모호한 서사적 리얼리티를 전제로 한다.
이중플롯으로 소설 텍스트를 분석하기 위해서는, 첫째 서술 주체에 의한 서술 재현 양상을 밝히고, 둘째, 서사의 전체적인 흐름에 순응하거나 저항하는 서사적 갈등을 찾는 것이다. 따라서 염상섭 장편 소설의 이중플롯에 대한 논의는 이러한 서사 주체의 현실 인식과 해석이 어떻게 서사적 재현 양상으로 드러나는 지를 밝히는 과정이다.
본고에서는 다음과 같이 염상섭 장편 소설에 있어서 몇몇 재현 양상을 구분하였고, 개별 텍스트 분석에 들어가서는 이러한 재현 양상이 어떻게 텍스트에 주제적·의미적으로 구조화 되는지를 살펴보았다.
첫 번째 재현 양상은 인물 서술 층위에서 인물 내면 심리의 서사적 반복이다. 내면적 갈등을 겪고 있는 인물의 행위와 심리가 서사적 사건 혹은 서사 구성 요소의 관계가 반복되는 경우이다. 이러한 구조적 특징이 두드러진 작품들로는『만세전』, 『해바라기』, 『너희는 무엇을 어덧느냐』, 『사랑과 죄』 등이다. 이 직품들의 주요한 서사적 갈등은 '선택'이다. 주인공들은 사회 비판적 인식에 기반한 능동적 현실 참여와 혐오스러운 현실로부터 도피하고자 하는 이중 심리 사이에서 선택 지연을 경험하며, 이러한 심리적 갈등이 서사적 반복 행위로 나타난다.
두 번째는 서술자의 강력한 서술적 권위에 의해 인물들의 욕망이 좌절되는 현실 인식의 환유적 재현 양상이다. 이러한 경향의 작품은 『사랑과 죄』, 『二心』, 『광분』이다. 이 작품들의 주요한 갈등은 인물들의 욕망과 서술자의 권위적인 서술의 대립이다. 서술자는 서사적 현실을 재현하고 있다는 의식이 강하며 견고한 도덕적 세계관으로 인물들의 삶을 비극적으로 이끌어나간다.
세 번째는 인물의 서술과 서술자의 서술이 매우 착종된 형태로 나타나는 가치 훼손의 다중 발화 양상이다. 이러한 문체적 특징이 두드러진 작품으로는 『만세전』, 『광분』, 『삼대』, 『무화과』 등이다. 이러한 작품들의 주요한 갈등은 '서사 주체가 그들이 경험하는 현실을 어떻게 오해하고 조작하는가' 라는 의문에서 시작된다. 따라서 서사 주체의 현실 인식은 매우 이중적 모습으로 나타나게 되는데, 이러한 이중적 현실 인식은 이야기 과정에서 표면적으로 가족관계의 갈등을 다루고 내면적으로는 정치적인 탄압과 이에 대한 저항 의식이 은폐되거나 서사적 침묵으로 처리되어 나타난다.
염상섭 장편 소설의 이중플롯에 대한 연구는 '허구'와 '이야기하기'에 대한 비판적 시각에서 이루어졌으며, 서사 구조가 단순한 사전 분석에 끝나지 않고 그 안에 인간의 심리적 차원이 도입되어 서사 주체의 현실 지각과 해석의 과정이 서사 재현으로 나타나는 과정을 분석한 것이다. 결론적으로 염상섭 소설의 이중플롯은 양가적이고 상대적인 서사적 현실을 이야기하는 재현 과정에서 자기 합리화의 토대를 미련하려는 서사 주체의 자기 혐오 의식이 구조화된 것이라 말할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The object of this thesis is to illuminate narrative strategy and presentation mode on Yeom Sang Sub's Novel that was published from early 1920s to early 1930s by Double-Plot. So, it would be presupposed that we must understand Duoble-Plot as a process to structuralized texts and characteristic of narrative-subject in discourse.
For double has a great of means, Double-Plot was argued in various theoretical aspects to define narrative level and to interpret a meaning of text Approaches to double-plot are those which expect the multilayered meaning-structure of narrative-presentation by plural cognition of narrative world Since Aristotle, Plot was suggested as an imitation of an action or a organization principle which connect facts of narrative world (events) by chronology and causality. But recently, the conceptual change of plot consists of a shift from a view of understanding plot as a functional relation of connecting main events or a structural description of action-structure to a view of defining plot as a energetic and organization principle of narrative elements which call attention to the thematic meaning and emotional effect in narrative. From this point of view, plot is an internal principle of narrative space; a possible world that is formed by narrative-subject that perceive, interpret, and desire objects in association of narrative elements. The limit of cognition and excessive intention of narrative-subject break narrative-reality and frustrates narrative-progress. So, Readers do not assimilate into narrative facts readily that are telling to reader, but regard narrative facts as an objective and ambiguous relation. The objective and ambiguous narrative-reality caused by the cognitional limit of narrative-subject is a precondition for Double-plot.
To analyze a novel-text. by double-plot, we first have to define narration- presentation mode descrived by a narrator and second find narrative-discords to follow or resist the total narrative-progress. To study the Double-Plot of Yeom Sang Sub's Novel is to reveal how the cognition and interpretation of narrative-subject to narrative-reality come into narrative-presentation.
In this thesis, I have arranged representation-modes in such a reason that it is related to narrative discord and tried to reveal how the representation-modes of Yeom Sang Sub's novels are structured in thematic and meaning through analysis of a each text
The first representation-mode is narrative-repetition of the internal psychology of persons on a character-narration level. The Action and psychology of a person who experiences internal discord repeat an action or a structural relation of narrative elements. There are Before March 3 grass-roots movement, Sunflower, What did you get? and Love and crime which have markedly this mode. The main narrative comflict of these novels is the choice. Protagonists experience choice-delay between a psychology to participate in the sociality with critical consciousness and a psychology to escape from disgusting reality, and this choice-delay is presented as narrative-repeat action.
The second presentation-mode is the metonymy presentation of reality-perceive in the way which narrator's authority frustrates charaters' desire. There are Two hearts and To run madly which show markedly such a mode. Main comflict of novel is the opposition happened between characters' desire and narrator's authority. Three-person Narrator himself has a faith to draw the narrative world with a concrete and moral worldview and then it's result make characters' life be tragic.
The third presentation-mode is plurality-speak-presentation that is compounded of person's narration and narrator's narration. This mode is suggested in the following: Before March 3 grass-roots movement, To run madly, Three generations, and A fig. Main conflicts of these novels starts from the question; how do narrative-subjects misunderstand and operate the reality which is experienced by themselves. Therefore, the subject's cognition of the reality is constituted of dual attitude. The dual cognition of the reality in story, telling awakens the contradiction of narrative truth. In the structure of texts, the dual cognition of the reality is treated as troubles in family internally and silence concealed the rejection against the political oppression in stories
A study of the double-plot about Yeom sang sub's Novel is discussed in fictionality and story-telling with critical view, and analyzed the progress in which is presented the narrative-subject's cognition and interpretation to narrative-reality on character's psychology level. In conclusion, the double plot of Yeom Sang Sub's Novel is structured by the self-hatred consciousness of narrative subject to form the basis of self-rationalization in telling about the ambiguous and contradictional narative-reality.
